Today was a big day for my eldest son, Kevin. He had his first big boy haircut. Before today, we have always stood by his side, told the hairdresser what to do and watched over the whole thing. We’ve been working on the rewards (奖赏) of responsibility with my son for quite some time. Today, he got one of those rewards by having his own haircut.
When they arrived at the shop, his father showed him a book with lots of styles of haircuts for boys. After he made his choice, he waited patiently for his turn. My husband decided he would get his own hair cut at the same time.
When their names were called, Kevin showed the hairdresser the picture of his chosen haircut, which, thankfully, was not a strange haircut. The hairdresser looked to my husband for approval (批准) and he told her his son was in charge.
During his haircut, Kevin talked happily with the hairdresser. My husband, who was getting his haircut in the next chair, kept silent. When all was said and done, Kevin looked quite handsome.
When it was time to pay, he reached into his pocket and took out the cash my husband gave him. He handed it to her and said, “Thanks, it’s all yours.” I guess that’s the six-year-old equivalent (对应的语句) of “keep the change.”
I have to admit I was a little nervous about the whole thing before, but I’m a believer now. My son is growing up and ready for new big boy experiences.

In many ways, our society doesn’t simply prepare for the kinds of lives that the elderly must lead. We have made medical advances that allow people to live longer than ever before, but we do not seem to know what to do with them after we have saved their lives. Too little allowance (津贴) is made for the person who is no longer earning a living, who can not walk long distances or drive a car, or who may have physical or mental disabilities that keep him from communicating with others. The institutional (慈善机构的) care we give our older people is a good reflection of the overall attitude of our society toward the aged.
In the past few years, nursing homes have received wide attention as boring, meaningless places where old people often have little else to do but wait for the end of their lives. Elderly wards in mental hospitals are even worse. One of the most shocking things abort nursing homes has been the unwillingness of people on the outside to show real concern for what happens in these institutions. Even people who are entrusting (委托) a parent to the care of a home rarely ask about the nurse-parent ratio (比率), about the kinds of creative facilities or physical treatment equipment available, or about the frequency of doctors’ visits.
And the government has provided federal money without enforcing high standards of care. In fact federal standards were lowered in 1974. Therefore, in some sense our concern for the aged seems to be moving backwards, not forwards. This picture is in striking contrast to the treatment of respectable patriarchs (男长者) and matriarchs (女长者) in many societies.

B. a country that can help people live longer should also be able to care for them better

3. The writer believes that people who place a parent in a nursing home should ____.
A. demand higher federal standards
B. consider the example set in other countries
C. be ashamed of not keeping the parents in their own homes
D. investigate it first
4. The writer complains ____.
A. about the indifference of some people towards nursing homes
B. about the shortage of equipment in nursing home

Food
Come mealtime, astronauts will have a special dining kitchen.Space food just keeps getting better—and more like food we enjoy here on Earth. In early space missions, astronauts could eat only freeze?dried food that didn’t require any preparation. But the space station is equipped with water, microwave ovens, and refrigerators, allowing the folks on board to eat more “normal” types of food, including fruit, vegetables, and ice cream!
Sleep
Each crew member has a private room. With no gravity, they’ll need to tie themselves to their beds,or they will float away! That might sound like a strange way to sleep, but astronauts from past space missions report that sleeping in space is actually pretty great!
Exercise
You might not think it,but exercise is even more important on the station than it is on Earth. There is not much gravity in space.Astronauts don’t stand up,sit down or walk in space,so their muscles and bones don’t have to work much—and this muscle and bone loss can be dangerous back on Earth. To fight this, astronauts on the station will exercise on bikes, rowing machines, and other equipment about two hours every day.
Clothing
Astronauts will have to wear special space suits while traveling aboard the U.S.shuttle or Russian rockets. But once they’re safe inside the space station, crew members can wear regular clothing.Of course,a specially designed, pressurized space suit is required for space walks. It has to withstand(经受住) flying pieces and protect the astronauts from dramatic temperature changes. It can range from 120 degrees below Fahrenheit in the shadow of the station to 250 degrees in the hot sun.
Personal Cleanliness
Simple tasks like brushing your teeth can be challenging in a weightless environment.A little water doesn’t flow in a stream—it suspends in a bubble!Astronauts will use a freshwater hose(软管) to take showers, shampoo, and wash off—then a second vacuum hose to suction(吸) off the dirty water. And how do you go to the bathroom in space? With a special “air toilet” that uses flowing air instead of water to dispose of waste.
1.The facts about life in space are all mentioned EXCEPT ________.
A.clothing? B.entertainment
C.sleep? D.exercise
2.What can be learned from the paragraph “Clothing”?
A.The temperature is quite different in different places in space.
B.Astronauts must wear special space suits all the time in space.
C.Astronauts can wear regular clothing for space walks now.
D.Astronauts wear pressurized space suits just to keep warm.
3.Why is exercise more important in space than on earth?
A.It can make astronauts feel relaxed in space.
B.It can help astronauts spend their spare time happily.
C.Astronauts’ lives are more important in space than on earth.
D.It can prevent astronauts from causing muscle and bone loss.
4.What do we know about space food from the text?
A.Astronauts could eat apples in space in the past.
B.Astronauts eat only fruit, vegetables and ice cream now.
C.Fresh food isn’t available to astronauts in space.
D.Space food is getting better now than before.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
No doubt the planet is warming. Over the last century, the temperature has risen by around one degree Fahrenheit. It’s reported that the global temperatures will rise by 3-10 degrees Fahrenheit—enough to have the polar caps almost melted. If the ice caps melt, buildings, homes and even lives will be under water.
While we know about global warming, what can we do to save the planet? The answer is simpler than supposed. You don’t have to go miles away to protest, or spend much money. Here are several simple steps to begin with.
Firstly, plant a tree.Trees , when fully grown, will keep the plante cooler.
Secondly, reduce pollution. Sometimes as simple as walking instead of taking the car will reduce pollution. Besides stop pollution, you are giving yourself exercise. So whenever you get into your car, just ask yourself, “do I have to make this journey by vehicle?”
When you get a little cold in winter, put a jumper on and don’t adjust the heating. The extra heat produced by homes also affect the planet.
Finally, reduce, reuse and recycle. Only buy what you need and reuse whatever you can, like containers and paper, and recycle what you cannot reuse.
If everyone stuck to these rules, we would be doing a great thing by protecting the Earth. It is our next generation that will feel the effects.
