My husband hasn't stopped laughing about a funny thing that happened to me. It is funny now but it wasn't at that time.

Last Friday, after 1 all family shopping in town, I wanted a rest 2 catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the 3 coffee shopthat cheap, self-service place with long tables to 4 . I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep 5 , and went to get a cup of coffee.

When I came back with the coffee, there was someone in 6 . It was one of those wild-looking youngsters, 7 dark glasses and torn 8 , and hair colored bright red at the front. Not so unusual these days. What 9 surprise me was that he had started to eat my chocolate.

Naturally, I was annoyed. 10 , to avoid troubleand really I was rather 11 about him, I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee, and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took 12 piece of my chocolate. I could 13 believe it. Still I didn't dare to 14 an argument. When he took a third piece, I felt more 15 than uneasy. I thought,“Well, I shall have the last piece.”And I got it.

The boy 16 me a strange look, then stood up. As he left he shouted out,“This 17 is crazy.”Everyone stared. That was embarrassing (令人难堪的) enough, but it was 18 when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went redas red as 19 when I realized I'd made a mistake. It wasn't my chocolate that he had been taking. There was mine, unopened, just 20 my newspaper.

Anger is good for you as long as you control it,according to a new psychology research.A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows anger may help people reduce the negative effects of stress and help you become healthier.

“Here getting emotional is not bad for you if you look at the case of anger,”said Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon.“The more people display anger, the lower their stress responses.”

Lerner studied 92 UCLA students by asking them to count back from 6,200.They must say out loud every thirteenth number.Researchers disturbed them by asking them to count faster or ask them other questions. If they made any mistake, they had to restart from the very beginning. Many students felt depressed about making so many mistakes or got angry.

Lerner used a hidden video camera and recorded all their facial expressions during the test. The researchers describe their reactions as fear, anger and disgust(厌恶).

Other researchers recorded the students’ blood pressure, pulse and production of a high-stress hormone(荷尔蒙)called cortisone.People whose faces showed more fear during the experiment had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the hormone. Both can have lasting effects such as diabetes(糖尿病),heart disease, depression and extra weight gain.

When people feel fear, negative effects increase, but when they get angry, those negatives go down, according to the study.

“Having that sense of anger leads people to actually feeling some power in what otherwise is a maddening(令人发狂的)situation,”Lerner said.

Lerner previously studied Americans’ emotional response to the 911 terrorist attacks two months after the incident. She found people who reacted with anger were more optimistic. These people are healthier compared with those who were frightened during the event. So in maddening situations, anger is not a bad thing to have. It’s a healthier response than fear.

It’s better to be angry than to be frightened in maddening situations.

A.

disturbing them and making them start all over again
