About a year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to mine. I never heard any noise from the children, but the parents were always shouting at the kids.
We often met in the hallway when we were coming or going. I always spoke, but the only answer I got was a hello from the four-year-old girl.
One afternoon when I returned, they were just coming out of their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things. But when I looked up I saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me. I hurried as much as I could and thanked her.
I was really touched by her act of kindness. That afternoon I was at the K-Mart and I bought a white Teddy bear for her. The next day, there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was very proud of the bear and thanked me like I had never been thanked before.
Now when we meet in the hall, we all speak in a friendly manner. As time passes, I don’t hear that yelling as often as before.
Last night we had about four inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered how I was going to keep my doctor’s appointment. I went out to remove the snow. But when I opened my front door, I found my car was there with all the snow removed. You couldn’t imagine how I felt at that moment. I thanked that family in my heart.
Isn’t it amazing how a small kind act of a four-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? My guardian angel says that good things come from small acts.

To Whom It May Concern:

On March 5, 2012 , I bought a Perfect Muffin Kit(松饼粉 ) from your store at Midfield Shopping Center. The cashier who assisted me was George. George was very friendly and told me that the Perfect Muffin Kit would live up to the guarantee on the box: “Perfect Muffins Every Time!”.

Unfortunately, this product did not live up to what it promised . The muffins I made were far from perfect . I followed the directions in the package very carefully . First , I removed the bag of mix from the box. Then , I poured it into a bowl. Next, I added the correct amount of water to the mix and stirred it. According to the directions, after stirring the mixture , I added half a cup of dried prapes, nuts , berries, or another favorite ingredient(配料 ) . My favorite ingredient happens to be hot sauce (沙司 ). I find that a bit of hot sauce makes pizza and soup taste very delicious. So, continuing to follow the directions, I added half a cup of hot sauce to the mix and stirred it. Finally, I poured the mix into muffin tins and baked it in the baker at 350 degrees for exactly 20 minutes.

When the muffins finished baking, I was very excited to eat the “Perfect Muffins” as promised on the box. You can imagine my disappointment when, upon tasting the muffins, I discovered that they were not perfect. These muffins were , in fact , absolutely terrible. Not even my dog was interested in eating these supposedly “perfect” muffins.

I would appreciate a full refund(退款 ) of $3.99 for this product as soon as possible. Enclosed are the receipt, the empty box, and one of the un-perfect muffins so that you can experience it for yourself . Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely ,

Michelle Bauer

三. 阅读理解(每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Ten years ago I used to be very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.

There’s a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!

Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

56. Compared with ten years ago, what is worse for the author now?

A. His job.      B. His pay.   C. His means of transport.      D. His health.

57. According to the passage, when the author got the better job, which of the following is NOT true?

A. He got higher pay.            B. His working hours weren’t long.

C. He found it very stressful.      D. He had little free time at weekends.

58. After the author had a heart attack, the doctor advised him _____.

A. not to work any longer            B. to take a long vacation abroad

C. to stop smoking and take exercise   D. not to eat out any more

59. What can we learn about the author?

A. The author is not sure what he should do now.

B. The author has taken the doctor’s advice.

C. The author has got another new job

D. The author feels much better now.

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But,as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history,I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history.Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.
The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past.I believe that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However,as the unfortunately(不幸地)true statement goes ‘‘the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to
learn from history”,perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.
A second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current(目前的)political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context(背景).We can not
even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.
I teach my children history, for one more reason.I bought a set of historical audio tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over.It was my hope that he would
become inspired by the accomplishments(成就)of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself.I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. By doing so,young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he didn’t accomplish.I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.
【小题1】What message can we get from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 ?

A.Many people aren’t clever enough to learn well from the past.
B.Many people fail to make good use of history and make the same mistakes.
C.Many people feel it hard to understand history.
D.Many people have no interest in studying history.
【小题2】In Paragraph 3,the author shows that history is useful because
A.it makes the current political situation go smoothly
B.it helps us realize the importance of historical events
C.it helps us understand why things are the way they are
D.it helps people accept the present situation where they live
【小题3】Some historical figures are mentioned in the last paragraph to show____.
A.people can be inspired to do good and also learn to fight against evil
B.people may also learn from bad historical figures
C.more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements
D.today’s people can also achieve what they achieved
【小题4】What would be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.How to teach history effectively.
B.Some negative reasons for studying history.
C.How to get more people to study history.
D.Some bad historical figures.
