Mark Gibson is a former gymnastics coach who once worked with many excellent athletes. He often tells a wonderful story about a 15-year-old 16 girl, Cindy, whose attitude brought out the best in everyone.
Cindy wasn’t a great 17 , but when she was in the gym, everyone complained less, worked harder, and, not 18 , achieved more. Cindy was such a powerful motivator 19 she could see nothing. When it was her turn to do the vault(跳马), mother would also 20 alongside her, and tell her how close she was to the vault. When her mom said, “Vault!”, Cindy would reach out and jump, 21 her mother and herself.
Cindy loved the sport and kept 22 because she and her mom refused to be defeated by her 23 . Mark called her the most 24 member of the team, not because of her 25 ability, but because of her heart and because she 26 a standard of perseverance(坚持) and courage that inspired others to get more out of themselves. Everyone who 27 her work hard to be the best 28 how much more they could get out of themselves.
This is leadership---leadership by 29 . And we see this sort of leadership not only in 30 but also in families and in the workplace. Often the most important members of the team are not the 31 , most skilled, or most powerful. Instead, their 32 is in their attitude and their ability to inspire and 33 others with their optimism, enthusiasm, and determination.
People who know how to get the best out of themselves get the best of others.
There’s no doubt that Cindy’s 34 has a great effect on her teammates. A person’s personality matters most because it comes from within and does not depend on 35 alone.

Many of the finer points of femininity(妇女气质) lapsed when women were urged to strive for equal rights and forget their feudal traditions, said course director Professor Sun Xun.
“After 1949,government policies emphasized women's rights so there were no women's colleges; they went to ordinary colleges,”he said.?
In the 1990s,the idea of all female colleges resurfaced. However, the new breed of women's colleges are not aiming to be centers of academic excellence modelled on Girton at Cambridge or Radcliffe on the U.S. east coast.?
Rather, these ,new finishing schools are modeled on the Swiss ideal of turning out young ladies who know how best to get out of a car, or arrange a bunch of flowers.? “We started the women's college because although there is emphasis on women's equality in society ,women's special talents are different,” said Sun.?
With China entering the World Trade Organization and the country's big cities becoming more cosmopolitan(世界性的),young people need to grasp international manners to succeed in business.?
Suggestions that these schools will merely turn out “Flower vases”—Chinese slang for trophy women who are empty but beautiful—are denied by the administration and students.“I can answer that accusation with facts, we are very capable. There is one girl in my course who already has written her first novel. Perhaps other people are just jealous,” said Huang.?
One woman who is sure that finishing schools will gain ground in China is June Yamada ,a Japanese entrepreneur who aims to set up a “Style Academy” in partnership with the Jinmao Group that co-owns Shanghai's Grand Hyatt hotel.?
Yamada hopes to sell training courses to corporations or aspiring career girls who want to work for international firm but still spit their chicken bones onto the table.?
“People need elegance .They need manners, and that is not the kind of thing that you find in university,” she explains.?
Shanghai Normal University, accepts only girls over 1.62 meters for Women's College courses because many companies place an emphasis on women being tall and pretty before considering them for jobs.?
But while many Chinese films do set height standards, the idea is unknown at multinationals.“I've seldom seen that kind of thing. As I recall, my secretary was quite short,” says Shah Olynik ,a public relations consultant who formerly worked for a major U.S.PR firm.?

查看习题详情和答案>>Dear Kind-Trustee-Who-Sends-Orphans-to-College,
Here I am! I traveled yesterday for four hours in a train. It’s a funny feeling, isn’t it? I never rode in one before.
College is the biggest, most puzzling place — I get lost whenever I leave my room. I will tell you more about it later when I’m feeling less confused; also I will tell you about my lessons. Classes don’t begin until Monday morning, and this is Saturday night. But I wanted to write a letter first just to get acquainted(认识的).
It seems strange to be writing letters to somebody you don't know. It seems strange for me to be writing letters at all — I've never written more than three or four in my life, so please overlook it if these are not a model kind.
Before leaving yesterday morning, Mrs. Lippett and I had a very serious talk. She told me how to behave all the rest of my life, and especially how to behave towards the kind gentleman who is doing so much for me. I must take care to be very respectful.
But how can one be very respectful to a person who wishes to be called John Smith? Why couldn’t you have picked out a name with a little personality? I might as well write letters to Dear Flagpole or Dear Clothes-line.
I have been thinking about you a great deal this summer; having somebody take an interest in me after all these years makes me feel as though I had found a sort of family. It seems as though I belonged to somebody now, and it’s a very comfortable feeling. I must say, however, that when I think about you, my imagination has very little to work upon. There are just three things that I know: I.You are tall. Ⅱ. You are rich. Ⅲ. You hate girls.
I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only that's rather rude to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man, but that's rude to you, as though money were the only important thing about you. Besides, being rich is such a very external(外在的) quality. Maybe you won’t stay rich all your life; lots of very clever men get broke in Wall Street. But at least you will stay tall all your life! So I've decided to call you Dear Daddy-Long-Legs. I hope you won’t mind. It’s just a private pet name we won’t tell Mrs. Lippett.
The ten o’clock bell is going to ring in two minutes. Our day is divided into sections by bells. We eat and sleep and study by bells. It's very lifeful. There it goes! Lights out. Good night.
Observe how precisely I obey rules — due to my training in the John Grier Home.
Yours most respectfully,
Jerusha Abbott
To Mr. Daddy-Long-Legs Smith
62. Jerusha thought that she couldn’t be very respectful to “John Smith” because __________.
A. he was a total stranger to her B. she was sure it was a false identity
C. the name was too common D. nobody would like to be called that way
63. According to Jerusha, being rich may be __________.
A. temporary B. unimaginable C. traditional D. rude
64. The fact that her day is “divided into sections by bells” makes Jerusha feel __________.
A. too busy B. restricted by rules C. pressed for time D. full of energy
65. Jerusha decided to call the trustee Dear Daddy-Long-legs __________.
A. in order to show her respect for him
B. because it was his only inner quality
C. in order to make them feel closer to each other
D. because she had always wanted a father
