My nephew's 10-year-old son came for a visit one hot,July weekend. I persuaded him to inside and joined him in a game. After for an hour, I suggested that we relax for a while. I fell into my favorite recliner(躺椅)to let my neck muscles relax. He'd slipped out of the room and I was catching a few enjoyable moments of peace and quiet.

"Look,Alice,”he said as he ran over to the chair where I was sitting"I found a kite. Could we go outside and it?"

Glancing out a nearby window, I noticed it was outside.“I'm sorry, Tripper,.” I said, sad to see his eyes. "The wind is not blowing today. The kite won't fly.”

The 10-year-old replied,“I think it's windy enough. I can get it to fly,”he answered as he ran out to the back door Up and down in the yard he ran, pulling the kite to a small length of string. He ran back and forth,as hard as his ten year-old legs would carry him, looking back at the kite behind. After about ten minutes of unsuccessful determination, he came back in.

I asked, "How did it go?"

"Fine,”he said, not wanting to admit .“I got it to fly some”

As he walked past me to return the kite to the closet shelf, I heard him say under his breath, "I guess I'll have to wait for the .”

At that moment I heard another Voice speak to my . "Alice, sometimes you are just like that. You want to do it your way instead of waiting for the Wind.,,

And the voice was right. We usually want to use our own efforts to what we want to do. We wait for the Wind only after we have done all we can and have exhausted(耗尽) our own   .We must learn how to rely on Him in the first place!

“There it is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And 17 I’m going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”

Paul 18 and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them 19 a memorable holiday ride.

One afternoon, many years ago, I went to pick up my mother from work.I got there a little early so I 1 the car by the roadside, across the street from where she worked, and 2 for her.

As I 3 outside the car window, to my fight there was a small park where I saw a little boy around two years old.He was running freely on the 4 as his mother watched him from a short distance. The boy had a big 5 on his face as if he had just been set 6 from some sort of prison. The boy would then fail to the grass, get up, and without looking back at his mother, run as 7 as he could again, still with a smile on his face, as if 8 had happened.

When kids, especially at an early age, fall down, they don’t see their falling down as a 9 , but instead, they treat it as a 10 experience. They have the desire to try and try again 11 they succeed~The answer must be that they have not 12 "falling down” with the word "failure" yet. Thus they don't know 13 to feel the state which accompanies failure. What’s more, they probably think that it’s perfectly Okay to fall down, and that it's not 14 to do So.In other words, they give themselves 15 to make mistakes subconsciously(潜意识地).Thus they 16 encouraged.

While I was touched by the boy’s persistence, I was 17 touched by the manner in which he ran. With each 18 , he looked so confident, so natural. No 19 of fear, of nervousness, or of being discouraged-as if he didn’t have a 20 about the world around him.I learned a lot from that observation and experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in my many pursuits in life.

Fifteen years spent in the field of education has provided me with many treasured moments. One of the most unforgettable 1 when I was teaching second 2 , 10 years ago.

In May I decided to plan something special for the children; a Mother's Day tea.We had put our heads together to 3 ideas of how to 4 our mothers. We practiced singing songs, memorized poems and wrote cards. We decided to hold our tea the Friday before Mother's Day.I was surprised and 5 to learn that every mother was planning to attend.I 6 invited my own mother.

Finally, the big day arrived. Each child 7 up at our classroom door, expecting the arrival of his or her mom. 8 it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn't shown up and he was looking 9

I took my mother by the hand and walked over to Jimmy.“Jimmy,”I said,“I have a bit of problem here and I was 10 if you could keep my mother 11 while I'm busy.”

My mom and Jimmy sat at a table.Jimmy 12 my mom her treats, presented her with the gift I had made, just as we had 13 the day before.Whenever I looked over, my mother and Jimmy were in deep 14

Now 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment.Last year, I took a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy, I had the students complete an outline of the day's 15 and an evaluation of our trip. Then I collected the students' booklets and checked them to see if 16 was completed. When I came 17 Jimmy's page, he had written“Remember our Mother's Day tea we had in second grade, Mrs, Marra?I do!Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too.”

I told him I really enjoyed what he had written. He looked rather embarrassed and 18 his own thanks and walked away.Suddenly he ran back and gave me a big hug.“Thanks again. No one even knew my mother didn't 19 it.”

I ended my workday with a hug from a teenage boy who had 20 stopped hugging teachers years ago.

Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team.“Football, tennis, cricket--anything with a round ball, I was useless.”he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England's rural Devonshire.

It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon.

The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man's coldwater exploits(成就). Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.

Journeys to the Pole aren't the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy.“John Ridgway was one of the few who didn't say,'You're completely crazy,'”Saunders says.

In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a close encounter(遭遇)with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.

Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation.

This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1 800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.

C.hired Saunders for his cold-water experience

D.won his fame for his voyage across the Atlantic

(3).What do we know about Saunders?

[ ]

A.He once worked at a school in Scotland.

B.He followed Ridgway to explore the North Pole.

C.He was the first Briton to ski alone to the North Pole.

(4).The underlined word“Intrigued”in the third paragraph probably means ________.

[ ]

A.Excited
B.Convinced
C.Delighted
D.Fascinated

(5).It can be inferred that Saunders' journey to the North Pole ________.

[ ]

A.was accompanied by his old playmates

C.was supported by other Arctic explorers

D.made him well-known in the 1960s
