In my thirty years as a Time Management speaker, I have observed a lot of what we can and should
not do to increase our daily result. Time Management is not necessarily working harder, but quicker and
smarter. Sometimes our mistakes will keep us from running at a full pace. Here are the top four Time
Management mistakes we should all avoid to help us to increase our daily success.
a). Start your day without a plan of action. If so, you will have worked hard but may not have done
enough of right things. Time Management is not doing the wrong things quicker. Time Management is
doing the right things.
b). Work with a messy(杂乱的) desk or work areas. Studies have shown that the person who works with a messy desk spends one and a half hours per day looking for things. If you have ever visited the
office of a top manager, who is working with a clean desk environment, you will find that the manager
works effectively(有效地).
c). Don't get enough sleep. Studies show that nearly 75% of us complain on a regular basis, all
throughout our days, that we are tired. For most people, they get the quantity of sleep, but they lack the
quality of sleep. Their days are filled with so much stress that they are out of control, working harder but
maybe not smarter, that it's difficult to get a full night's sleep.
d). Don't take a lunch break. Many do not take a lunch break, working through that period in the
hopes that it will give them more time to produce results. Studies have shown it may work just the
opposite. After doing what we do for several hours, we start to feel tired. A lunch break, even short,
gives us a chance to get our energy back again.
1. The purpose of this passage is to __________.
A. show how to become a speaker
B. explain the importance of Time Management
C. persuade us to get rid of bad habits
D. tell us to avoid Time Management mistakes
2.  We may know from the passage that Time Management is about ____________ .
A. how to deal with a lunch break
B. how to get the quality of sleep
C. how to do right things quicker and smarter
D. how to avoid doing the wrong things
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Working with a plan of action can save one and a half hours per day.
B. Studies have shown that most people work with a messy desk.
C. People can't get a full night's sleep mainly because of too much stress.
D. The longer a lunch break is, the more efficiently people will work.
4. The author holds the following opinions EXCEPT ____________.
A. Time waits for no man.
B. Good order leads to great success.
C. A year's plan starts with spring.
D. No rest, no work.

No one has enough, but everyone has all there is. We each have just twenty-four hours in a day. Time
is not our problems , but what we do with the limited time we have is the issue. Many people spend their
days on dozens of activities , but achieve very little because they aren't concentrating on right things. The
Pareto Principle, also known as the 80:20 Rule shows us that typically eighty per cent of unfocused effort
generates only twenty percent of the results. The remaining eighty per cent of the results are achieved
with only twenty percent of the effort . To effectively manage your time, you need to change where you
are spending your time. We all have the same amount of time every day. How you spend your time is
how you spend your life. Here are time management strategies, which may be helpful.
     Learn to say no
Politely say no should become a habit. Saying no frees up time for the things that are most important.
     Make a "to-do" list
List the tasks that need to be done in order of their importance. Save other less important things for
when you have time.
Minimize interruption
Plan ahead. Think through projects. Look for ways to "block" interruptions. For example, close your
door, don't answer the phone or work in a different space.
Combine several activities
Try to do several activities at one time. While going to school, listen to taped notes. This allows up to an
hour or two a day of good study review. While showering, make a mental list of the things. Above all,be
creative, and let it work for you.

1. According to the Pareto Principle, we can know that_________.

A. people can't achieve a lot even though they concentrate on right things
B. people should focus more effort on right and important things and finish them first
C. people are certain to succeed if they spend twenty per cent of their time
D. eighty per cent of effort spent on one matter is useless

2. According to the passage, if you want to do several things on Sunday, you should __________.

A. do them while listening to the music
B. do all of them at one time
C. do the most important one first
D. put some of them off till next Monday

3.The underlined word"block"in the passage means"___________ ".

A. accept
B. prevent
C. arrange
D. defend

4.What would be the best title of the passage?

A. Time Management

C. How to Make a "To-do" List
D. Time and Habits

When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are.

People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.

People who are farsighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts(白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the sides of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they cannot see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive(敏感的) in daylight, is not so sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark.
