JAPANESE scientists have developed a special kind of tomato. It can change an eater's sense of
taste, says a report in Science News. For about an hour after a person eats one of the tomatoes, sour foods taste sweet.
Say you eat one of the tomatoes before lunch. Then you take a bite of a lemon (柠檬). You will
find that the lemon tastes like super-sweet lemonade.
How magical is that ! The key ingredient in the taste-changing tomatoes is " miraculin (非洲奇果蛋白 ) ". Miraculin is found in berries that grow in West Africa. These fruits are sometimes sold as "
Miracle(奇迹) Fruit" berries.
People have long known about the ability of miracle berries to change taste. In some countries, the
berries are used as a way to help people lose weight: For example,a dieter can eat a berry and then eat
low-calorie sour foods that will
taste wonderfully sweet.
Scientists found miraculin in the miracle berry in 1968. Since then, people have wondered how to
manufacture it. One way could be to harvest the berries. The problem was that if demand got too large,
the berry plants could be driven to extinction.
That's where the Japanese scientists came in. Professor Kazuhisa Kato and his team at the University of Tsukuba studied the DNA of the miracle berry. They found a gene(基因) that contained the
instructions for how to make miraculin.
Kato and other researchers put the gene for miraculin into the DNA of a tomato. As a result, the
tomatoes started to make miraculin. Those tomatoes had just as much miraculin as miracle berries do.
These "miracle" tomatoes could be grown in large numbers. If scientists can grow other foods with
miraculin inside, then there won't be any need to harvest all the miracle berries.
The researchers don't know yet how the tomato-based miraculin can be used. Perhaps it could be sold as a dieting food,to be taken before meals.
B. it can only be eaten before lunch
C. it changes a sour taste to a sweet one
D. it has a magical ingredient
B. discovered the secrets of miracle fruit berries in 1968
C. have planted miracle tomatoes in large numbers
D. invented the miraculin gene and put it into the tomato=
B. The tomato is a low-calorie fruit that tastes wonderfully sweet.
C. Scientists have already found many uses for mariculin.
D. The tomato-based miraculin might help people lose weight,so it might be used as a dieting food.

Today, whether or not you follow the latest trends, one’s fashion and choice of dress is a reflection of one’s individual style and tastes. Can you still remember how you dressed at the start of China’s opening-up? Today’s program is one of a special series commemorating (纪念) the 30th anniversary of reform and opening-up in China. In these two episodes we focused on fashion and style and were honored to invite two special guests to join us in studio—Ms. Zhang Ling from Raffles-BICT Inter-national College and Alex from Esquire magazine.
When we talk about fashion, color is absolutely crucial. A color can reflect the mood of an individual person or the spiritual temperament(性情) of entire society or age. Mrs. Zhang and Alex talked about the colors which have left the greatest impression on them. In the 1960s and 70s, blue and grey were the dominant colors at the time and people had limited choices to dress up. But fast forward to the present, you will find no difficulty in choosing from array(大批) of vivid colors in the market.
We also gave our guests a list of keywords—traditional brands, jeans, DIY, international brands, personal dress for them to choose from in order to represent the fashion of their generation. We find out that for every keyword our guest chose, there was a special story behind it. Some of the stories brought us back to old times—we even brought some vintage(古老的) clothing from the 60s and 70s up on stage and invited some audience members to try them on.
When we mention fashion, we must mention brand. With increasing disposable(可自由使用的) income and purchasing power of the Chinese, many luxury brands have flocked into China. However, you could imagine in 1980s, when the first inter-national brand came to China, it unveiled(展示) a fashion storm among the Chinese.

Now the VOA Special English program Words and Their Stories.
Baloney is a kind of sausage that many Americans eat often. The word also has another meaning in English. It is used to describe something, usually something someone says that is false or wrong or foolish. Baloney sausage comes from a name of the Italian city Balonia. The city is famous for its sausage, a mixture of smoked, spiced meat from cows and pigs.
But baloney sausage does not taste the same as beef or pork alone. Some language experts think this different taste is responsible for the birth of the expression“baloney”.“Baloney”is an idea or statement that is nothing like the truth. In the same way that baloney sausage tastes nothing like the meat that is used to make it.
“Baloney”is a word often used by politicians to describe the ideas of their opponents. The expression has been used for years. Fifty years ago, a former governor of New York State, Alfred Smith, criticized some claims by President Franklin Roosevelt about the successes of the Roosevelt administration. Smith said,“No matter how thin you slice it, it is still baloney.”
A similar word has almost the same meaning as“baloney”. It even sounds almost the same. The word is“blarney”. It began in Ireland about 1600. The lord of blarney castle near Cork agreed to surrender the castle to British troops. But he kept making excuses for postponing the surrender. And he made them sound like very good excuses. This is just more of the saying“blarney”.
The Irish castle now is famous for its Blarney Stone. Kissing the stone is thought to give a person special powers of speech. One who has kissed the Blarney Stone, so the story goes, can speak words of praise so smoothly and sweetly that you believe them even when you know they are false.
A former Roman Catholic bishop of New York City Fortin Shin once explained,“Baloney is prayed so thick it cannot be true, and blarney is prayed so thin we like it.”
Another expression is“pulling the wool over someone's eyes”. It means to make someone believe something that is not true. The expression goes back to the days when men wore false hair or wigs similar to those worn by judges today in British courts. The word“wool”was a popular joking work for hair. If you pull the man's wig over his eyes he could not see what was happening. Today, when you pull the wool over someone's eyes he cannot see the truth.
