Is it possible that the people of the world today could agree upon a single international language that everyone would be able to speak and understand?
In the United Nations there are five official languages-English, Chinese,
Russian, French and Spanish. How about making one of them into an international language? English has been worked on for this purpose. A basic word list of 850 English words named Basic English was made. These are the only verbs in the entire list,“come, go, give, keep, let, do, put, make, say, be, seem, may, will, have, send.”Writing in Basic English may require you to use a greater number of words-as in having to say“It came to my ears”instead of I heard-but you can still say anything you want to with just 850 different words and a few sufixes(后缀)and prefixes(前缀).This is a much smaller number of words to have to remember than the ordinary number offered to the students of a foreign language.
But people have always had a need to do more than simply“Tell it as it is”. Language is for reporting not only one's work. For this, a language needs idioms, needs all kinds of grammar and style(文体)that show its history and development just as a person needs eyebrows(眉毛). Is there some special reason why our lips should be a different color from the rest of our face? Perhaps not, but this is how people-real people-are. For communication between people, languages of all kinds will remain to reflect(反映)the growth and soul of the societies that speak them.

B.Languages are like mirrors which can reflect the growth of the mankind.

查看习题详情和答案>>There is no question that teenagers need rules, which is often not a difficult thing for parents to give. What can be more challenging is giving teenagers their freedom. It can be difficult to draw the line between the two. However, some issues cannot be changed by discussion and require firm rules. For instance, rules should be established concerning driving the family car.
I will admit that I have no problem coming up with rules. To me they make life easier and they leave no room for questioning. What can be more difficult, however, is giving my teens their freedom. I guess there are really two primary reasons for this. One is that I sometimes am afraid to give them freedom. The second is that I’m not always so sure what the freedom should be.
It helps that I have a husband with whom I can discuss these problems. We talk about them, give our thoughts and then we come up with an agreement. Sometimes one of us might be more unwilling but we know that there comes a time when we really do have to learn how to let go of the reins (缰绳) a bit.
If we try to make life have nothing but rules, we are more likely to see our teen’s rebelling (反抗). They need to know that while we do have certain expectations, we also trust them to begin making their own choices and decisions. How else can they do that unless they are given the space and room to do it?
It’s really all about balance and I will be the first to admit that it can be a challenge to carry out. However, it is a necessary part of growing up. Yes, teens definitely need rules but they also need freedom.

Success starts within our mind. Now, we will discuss
four steps to change our lives and create a new future.
■ 1. Think big. Get rid of negative(负面的)beliefs.
Your beliefs have developed
from what happened to you in the past. You should realize that the past is not
equal to the future, unless you really live there. The first thing you need to
do is to drive all the negative beliefs away from your mind. Those beliefs are
not useful for creating a new future. Think that everything is possible if you
put enough effort in it. When you change your beliefs into positive ones, you
will feel more powerful. You will then be able to move on to the next level.
■ 2. Write your plan to achieve your
goals.
Your great goals should be
divided into smaller goals. Make a timetable for each goal so that you can measure
your progress. Write a detailed plan to achieve these goals.
■ 3.Take action according to your plan.
Nothing bears fruit without
action. Every successful person has to work hard towards his or her goals.
There is no exception(例外). Be prepared to work according to your plan. Be willing to invest
(投资) in the resources necessary for your progress. Do
not give up.
■ 4. Review what you have done and know
how good you are.
While you are in the process
of your work, take some time to review how well you have done. Review your
progress based on your plan and see if you need to change anything. You can
change your methods but you should not change your goals.
1.
Why should we get rid of our negative beliefs?
A.They come from our past experiences. B.The past and the future are different. C.They will stop us from starting a new future. D.We should learn some useful things.
2. According to the second step, to achieve your big
goals, you should _________.
A.change your methods B.make full use of every minute C.divide them into smaller ones and achieve them one by one to time D.measure your progress from time
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.During your work, be prepared to change everything. B.If you feel your goal difficult, you’d better give it up. C.Considering changing the ways you achieve goals is useful. D.Reviewing is more important than setting goals.
4. Which of the following has the same meaning as
"Nothing bears fruit without action."?
A.No pain, no gain. B.Better early than late. C.He laughs last who laughs best. D.Nothing succeeds like success.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.How to Live a Happy Life B.Ways to Create Your New Future C.How to Change Yourself D.Nothing Bears Fruit Without Action
