　　IN the stillness of a sleepless Saturday evening, Linda and Cindy were lying in bed, their minds drawn to deliberate on the same thing．

　　They hadn’t been on speaking terms since last Saturday, when they had a fierce quarrel．The whole week was torture(折磨)．Both wished to make up, but neither was willing to break the ice．

　　The clock was ticking rhythmically in the dorm．Both girls counted in their heads：“Five, four, three, two, one, speak．”

　　“Shall we talk?”both started and stopped at the same time．Feeling embarrassed, they paused for a few uncomfortable seconds before starting again：“Sorry, I…”

　　Again, both paused but soon began laughing heartily．

　　Sitting up, Cindy gestured with her hand and said,“Look, Linda, I’m sorry, I really am．I was being unreasonable．”

　　“No, the fault’s all mine,”said Linda．“I was too upset and I vented(发泄)it all on you．”

　　“Well, well, forget about it,”Cindy said in a jokingly childish voice．“We are what we are．”

　　The once-thick wall had crumbled(崩溃，瓦解)．

　　“But, Cindy, do think of changing!Sorrows do not justify(证明…正确、有道理)your being so pessimistic(悲观的)all the time．You are not alone; I will always be by your side．Don’t let the miseries of the past hold you back．”

　　“I just can’t get over all that’s happened．Death has carried away my parents and every other thing there is in me．”

　　“Come now,”said Linda．“Life is in our own hands!Find a way out!”

　　“OK, I’ll try．Anyway, there is a writing competition．I’ve already signed us up for it,”said Cindy, a smile forming on her face．

　　When we speak of a basic human need we mean something which is necessary to life, something we cannot possibly do without．Food is a basic human need．Without it we would starve to death; but even if we have plenty of food, but of the wrong kind, our bodies will suffer from a lack of the right food．This is known as malnutrition．

　　In primitive countries, people want only the foods which can be grown near their homes, whereas we eat foods which are often grown many thousands of miles away from our homes．Just think of the different types of meat we cat, beef mutton, pork, chicken, turkey, goose, and rabbit．We could manage on a diet of one kind of meat, but how monotonous it would become! Even turkey, which most of us eat only at Christmas, would become monotonous(单调的)if we ate it every day．

　　Yet we cannot live on meat alone, and need other foods like bread and fruit to provide us with other essential nutrients which we need to keep our bodies healthy．

　　We can agree with primitive man that food is a basic need, but we differ：from him in our food wants because of．the wide variety of food we have available compared with him; we have a wider choice．Take fruit, for example, not only can we enjoy the fruits grown in this country, but because of modem methods of transport and food preservation, we can also enjoy the more exotic fruits from countries thousands of miles away, whereas primitive man, is limited in his choice to the kinds of fruit which actually grow where he lives．

　　However they differ in satisfying their hunger primitive and civilized men both experience the basic need for food．

　　The same is true of the second of our human needs．Clothing is necessary to regulate the heat of our bodies．Since we live：in a temperate climate we need more clothes than people living in tropic conditions．Likewise, our clothing needs to change with seasons．

　　Shelter, the third of our needs, depends upon the climate, the skill of the builder, one's social position, and the materials available．The simple shelter of the aboriginal would not do for US, and yet it satisfies his needs．The three bed roomed suburban house of the average family would not be grand enough for a rich family, and yet the modern house contains many of the material comforts which were denied to the kings and queens of old times．

　　But when we asked our readers whether they would clone their beloved animals, the responses were split almost down the middle．Of the 228 readers who answered it, 108 would clone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion．

　　Clearly, from readers' response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and eventual sadness of owning a pet．It speaks, as well, to people's widely differing expectations over the developing scientific procedure．

　　Most of the respondents who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original; many felt the process would actually return an exact copy．Those on the other side, however, held little hope a clone could never truly recreate a pet, many simply didn't wish to go against the natural law of life and death．

　　Both sides expressed equal love for their animals．More than a few respondents owned“the best dog/cat in the world”．They thought of their pets as their “best friend”,“a member of the family ,”“the light of my life．” They told moving stories of pets' heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion．

　　Little wonders the loss is so disturbing－and the cloning so attractive．“People become very close to their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies ,”says Gary Kowalski, author of Goodbye, Friend：Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet．“For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away…It's understandable．Death is always painful．It's difficult to deal with．It's hard to accept．”

　　But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seemed to be at the heart of this problem．

　　“I'm deeply proud of him, ” gushed Kale Wang, granddaughter of Wang Dulu, whose martial arts novel inspired Lee's “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” in 2000．

　　Kate Wang, a public relations executive at the American Chamber of Commerce in Beijing, said that she considered Lee a family friend and that his win is one more evidence to his excellent talent at exploring the subtleties(微妙)of human feelings．

　　“Ang Lee's movie is very touching．It's simple but perfect, ” commented Zhang Yuan, a Chinese film director of the “Sixth Generation”．“I sincerely congratulate him．He is the pride of all Chinese directors everywhere．”

　　Despite the Best Director nod, the film “Brokeback Mountain” lost to “Crash” in the Best Picture category．It was widely seen as an upset because “Brokeback” had been winning many awards, from the Golden Bear in Venice, to the Golden Globe and the Independent Spirit Awards, and was seen by most observers as a shoo - in(呼声)for the highest Oscar．
