　　While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face．Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one．This phenomenon(现象)is commonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢综合症)．

　　In order to seek(寻找)better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home．Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them．The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries．Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do．This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves．

　　The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries．Our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”．

　　After her father died, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony held in London in 1953．As a queen, she has many duties, and leads a very busy life．She travels throughout the world, meeting the leaders of other countries, and attends a large number of official functions．She also holds a meeting every week with the British Prime Minister．Every year, on Christmas Day, she broadcast a message to the people of British and the Commonwealth, talking about her hopes for the future．

　　Queen Elizabeth has been on the throne for more than 40 years and has become one of the most famous women in the world．Lots of people in British believe that she tries hard to understand her people and be a good queen．More than her title, this quality has earned her much love and respect．

　　I had my first job at the age of thirteen, when a friend of my mother’s who owned a bookshop hired me for six hours a week to help her in the shop．I was very proud to earn my own pocket money and my parents never interfered with how I spent it, even when I was spending it foolishly．They believed that by earning money, spending it, and learning from my mistakes, I would become more mature and responsible about how to handle work, relationships with others, and money．

　　Like many American parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they worried a great deal．When I was sixteen, for example, after I finished high school and before I entered university, I wanted to spend the summer months traveling around Europe．My mother was against the idea of my traveling alone at such a young age, but my father felt that it would be a great experience for me．In the end, my father won the argument on the condition that I limited my traveling to France, my mother’s home, where I had my uncles, aunts and cousins spread out through the country who could provide shelter and help if I needed it．

　　Three years later, when he was eighteen, my younger brother decided to take a year off after his first year in university and travel through the United States and the Caribbean．Again my mother was very worried and not eager to see my brother leave school, but my father encouraged him and my brother had a fascinating year working his way on trains and ships to earn passage to different ports and cities, and discovering many fascinating places and people．

　　These kinds of experiences are probably rare for children in many countries, but in the US they are fairly common．Most parents start pushing their children at young age to do small things by themselves．By the time they have finished high school, many American kids have already had part - time jobs, traveled around the US or other countries on their own, selected the university they plan to attend and maybe even decided on their future career, and so on．
