A farmer now holds sleep 5 on a regular basis, and during the past year over 100,000 people have 6 to watch the race. “I was passing the farm on my way to the sea for a holiday,” one punter(赛马经纪人) 7 ,“ and I thought I'd have a look. I didn't believe it was serious, to tell you the truth.”According to a(n) 8 visitor, betting on sheep is more interesting than betting on horses. “At Proper horse races everyone has already studied the form of the horse 9 , and there arc clear favorite. 10 nobody has heard anything about these 11 ! Most people find it difficult to tell one from 12 in any case. ”I stayed to watch the races, and I must 13 that I found it quite 14 . In a usual sheep race, half a dozen sheep race downhill over a course of about half a mile. Food is 15 for them at the other end of the 16 just to give them some encouragement, I ought to add! The sheep run surprisingly fast, 17 they have probably not eaten for a while. 18 , the crowd around me were obviously 19 their day out at the races. 20 by their happy faces and the sense of excitement.

[1]As we all know, being successful is closely tied to what your attitude is.Today we are going to look at four common beliefs held by many that may affect their being successful in many aspects of their lives.

  1.Being Lucky

[2]It is all too often that people consider the good fortune of others as being the result of pure luck. What a copout! By having the mindset(思维定势)that luck is something that randomly falls out of the sky, many people put limits on themselves as to what they could have accomplished.

2.Associating Displeasure with Work or Study

[3]Think about how you can perform well in an environment that is boring or unappealing to you.To most failures, I assume your failure is mainly because your heart is not into it and your attitude therefore does not allow you to be at your most productive.

  3._________

[4]A commonly accepted belief is:to be successful you MUST devote many hours along with many years. As a matter of fact, long hours and hard work doesn’t necessarily mean success. After all, success depends on many factors.

  4.Self Imposed Limitations

[5]Many have grown to believe they can not achieve success due to a variety of reasons. In fact it often seems they put more effort into producing reasons as to why they can not succeed than efforts leading to success.

[6]The only limitations we face in our lives are the ones we place upon ourselves. If you are not willing to remove some of these limitations and at least try, you would be content with what you have in life and never possess success.

There's a man in the habit of hitting me on the head with an umbrella. At first I couldn't stand it;now I'm used to it.

I don't know his name.I know he's average in appearance, wears a gray suit, and has a common face. One hot morning, when I was sitting on a tree?shaded bench in Palermo Park, reading the paper, suddenly I felt something touch my head.It was the very same man who now,as I'm writing, keeps striking me with an umbrella.

On that occasion I turned around filled with anger. He just kept on hitting me.I asked him if he was crazy. He didn't even seem to hear me.Then I threatened to call a policeman.Calmly, cool as a cucumber,he stuck with his task. After a few moments of hesitation, and seeing that he was not about to change his attitude,I stood up and hit him on the nose. The man fell down. But he immediately got back on his feet, obviously with great effort, and without a word again began hitting me on the head with the umbrella. His nose was bleeding and,at that moment,I felt sorry for him.I felt regret for having hit him so hard. After all,the man wasn't exactly hitting me;he was merely tapping me lightly with his umbrella, not causing any pain at all.Of course, those taps were extremely bothersome. As we all know, when a fly lands on your forehead, you don't feel any pain;what you feel is annoyance.Well then, that umbrella was one huge fly that kept landing on my head time after time.

Convinced that I was dealing with a madman,I tried to escape. But the man followed me,wordlessly continuing to hit me.So I began to run(I should point out many people run as fast as I do).He took off after me,trying to land a blow. The man was out of breath so that I thought,if I continued to force him to run at that speed,he would drop dead right then and there.

1.When the man began to strike the author with an umbrella, the author________.

A.became angry

C.turned around and escaped

D.turned around and fought back

2.The author would most probably agree that the man was

________.

A.deaf B.blind

C.dead D.mad

3.The author felt sorry for the man because________.

A.the man formed a bad habit of beating others

B.he hit the man so hard that his nose bled

C.the man couldn't catch up with him

D.there was a fly on the man's head

4.It can be learned from the passage that the man ________.

A.shouted loudly while hitting the author

B.wanted to tell the author something

C.ran after the anthor breathlessly

D.acted as if he were a fly
