Ann started work last summer, so she didn't have a holiday. She saved as much as she could and, in January, she booked a package trip to Rosas, in Spain. She left London airport early on the first Saturday in August. She was very excited, as that was her first trip abroad. During the flight they had a snack, and when they arrived at Barcelona airport, a special bus was ready to take them to their hotel in Rosas. The weather was beautiful and Ann enjoyed the bus trip.

At the hotel, she checked in, and then went to her room to change before dinner. She was just ready to go downstairs, when she found that her Spanish money wasn't in her handbag. She carefully looked in all her luggage, but she couldn't find it. All she had was a small purse with ten English notes in it!

Ann found a place to change her English money. She had a few pesetas, and she would be here for two weeks. On her way back to the hotel, Ann bought some cheese, some bread and some oranges. When she got back, she told the manager that her doctor had told her not to eat Spanish food; she would just have breakfast every day. That was all right, as she knew the price of hotels included breakfast.

For the rest of her holiday, Ann swam in the hotel swimming pool, or lay on the beach and got a sunbath. She also went for long walks with one of the other tourists, a Scottish girl called Jane. However, when the others went to interesting places, she always said she wasn't well. In fact, her holiday wasn't bad, except that she was always hungry. After all, a piece of fruit for lunch, and bread and cheese for supper isn't very much... especially not for two weeks.

Late in the afternoon of their last day, Ann and Jane were on the beach. Jane asked her why she never ate with them in the hotel restaurant. The food was excellent. Ann told her all about her money problems. Jane looked at her for a minute, and then said, “But didn't you know? The price of this holiday includes absolutely everything!”

任务型阅读(每空一词)

Beggars are often seen sitting under blankets with heads sadly bowed as people pass them by in Cambridge's market center. Some ask people passing by for change and some just sit and wait to be given money.A few use aggressive behavior to earn money.

To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an“alternative giving”plan has been suggested.Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It aims to encourage people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give generously to local homeless causes.

Supporters of this plan think it will be an effective way to solve the beggars' alcohol and drug problems. But the police oppose the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive cash may turn to criminality(犯罪)to feed their addictions. The homeless charity“Crisis”said the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive plans can help create local understanding and sympathy instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food, and clothes.

Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries.Governments must play a big role in solving this problem.Training beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one option. This is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist. The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.

“There is a senseless idea that children, grow up and leave home when they are 18, and the troth is far from that,” says sociologist Lary Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin.Today, unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents.“There is a major shift in the middle class,” declares sociologist Allasan Schnailberg of Northwestern University, whose son, 19, moved back in after an absence of eight months.

Analysts cite a variety of reasons for this remm to the nest. The marriage age is rising, a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people.A high divorce rate and a declining remarriage rate are sending economically pressed and emotionally hurt survivors back to parental shelters. For some, the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so excessively great that many students now attend local schools.Even after graduation, young people find their wings cut by skyrocketing housing costs.

Living at home, says Knighton, a school teacher, continues to give her security and moral support. Her mother agreed, “It’s ridiculous for the kids to pay all that money for rent.It makes sense for kids to stay at home.” But sharing the family home requires adjustments for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy. Some families, however, manage the delicate(微妙的)balancing act.But for others, it proves too difficult.Michelle Del Turco, 24, has been home three times and left three times.“What I considered a social drink, my dad considered an alcohol problem,” she explains.“He never liked anyone I dated, so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends’ houses.”

Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on?Most psychologists feel lengthy homecomings are a mistake.Children, struggling to establish separate identities, can end up with “a sense of inadequacy, defeat and failure.” And again parents, who should be enjoying some financial and personal freedom, find themselves stuck with responsibilities. Many agree that brief visits, however, can work beneficially.
