Dear Lan Lan,
I’m now writing to you at Hartsop, a village in the Lake District, a place to have most beautiful scenery(景色)in English couple here to spend Christmas with them. This was planned for overseas students to know British way of life by living with British families.
We came two days before Christmas and during our stay, we have had everything we expected. Christmas turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas puddings, Christmas parties and Christmas gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing(有趣的), but above all these, we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客)of the family, Roger and Anne Marie.
Anne Marie was a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around. Roger, who was a doctor, knows a lot about
After three months away from home, we are again feeling how sweet a home can be. Roger and Anne Marrie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a person-to-person feeling, instead of a British-to-Chinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.
How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about “when we go back home next year…” and soon we will turn this into “when we go back home THIS year…” for the New Year’s Day is coming. Miss you.
Love
Cao Wen

I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.
The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.
As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away.
Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire. There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning.
The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.
The principal says the fire was my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.
I am very sorry about this.
Much love, Sarah
P.S.
None of the above is true, but I have failed my exams. I just want you to know how bad things could have been!

an important recognition of my work, but the real pleasure was in the work itself. Scientific research is like an exploration of a voyage of discovery. You are continually trying out new things that have not beendone before. Many of them will lead nowhere and you have to try something different, but sometimes an
experiment does work and tells you something new and that is really exciting. However small the new
finding may be, it is great to think "I am the only person who knows this" and then you will have the fun of
thinking what this finding will lead to and deciding what will be the next experiment. One of the best things about scientific research is that you are always doing something different and it is never boring. There are
good times when things go well and bad times when they don't. Some people get discouraged at the
difficult times but when I have a failure, my policy has always been not to worry but to start planning the
nextexperiment, which is always fun.
It is very exciting to make a new discovery. Some people will do the strangest things for this
excitement, such as going round the world in a balloon or walking to the North Pole. There are not many
new places to explore but there is a lot of new information to be discovered in science and a journey into
this unknown area can be much more worthwhile and just as exciting.
I'm sometimes asked, "What do you have to do to win a Noble Prize?" My answer is, "I don't know.
I have never tried. " But I know of one way not to win. There are some people whose main reason for
doing science is to win prizes and they are always thinking about how to do it. Such people don't succeed. To do good science you must be interested in it and enjoy doing experiments and thinking out problems.
And, of course, you must be prepared to work hard and not to be too discouraged by failures.
1. In the writer's eyes his greatest pleasure in all his lifetime is .
A. to win the Nobel Prize for the first time
B. to be awarded the Nobel Prize for the second time
C. in the work itself
D. to have a much more important recogniition of his work
2. Why did the writer think scientific research to be one of the best things?
A. You will be able to win the Nobel Prize through the scientific research.
B. You can make as much money as possible by doing the scientific research.
C. You may continue doing with something different and exciting, and so you can never be
tired of doing the scientific research.
D. You can get much more chances of promotion(晋级) by making the scientific research.
3. What would the writer do when he had a failure?
A. He would forget this failure and start the next experiment.
B. He used to be womed about it for several days and never forget it.
C. He always gave up his study as the result of the failure.
D. He used to think out the reasons and then continue to do it again.
Two years ago my grandmother was going to turn 75. My family discussed what the best way to celebrate was. Should we throw her a party? Should we take her on a trip? We remembered that she had touched so many people's lives, and there were so many people for her to consider. Then someone got the idea that we should include everyone in the celebration by turning it into a tribute(献礼) to my grandmother.x k b 1 . co m We secretly sent out letters to the people in Grandmother's address book and asked them to send a letter with a memory that they had shared with her. People sent us letters with poems, stories and pictures. The deep feeling that was shared through the response surprised us. We compiled(编辑)these letters into a memory book and amazed her with it on the morning of her birthday.
The unusual thing about my grandmother's friends was not the number that she had, but the connection they shared. In many ways this book of friendship was the greatest achievement of my grandmother's life.
I believe that developing true friendships is one of the most important things that anyone can do in one's lifetime. It is not a matter of the number of friends one has, but the quality of the bonds. If one has had at least one true friendship before dying, then one can say one has lived a successful life. I have made many friends and I believe I have begun to develop the same types of friendships my grandmother kept up over her lifetime. I only hope that I will be as successful as she has been.
