If you really want to win the weight-loss battle, learn to strike a balance-not just on your plate, but also in how you spend your free time.A new study finds that people who spend more time in front of computers have a higher obesity(肥胖)risk, even if they think they get enough exercise during the week.

This study found only an association between weight and computer use.“Is it that you become overweight because you use the Internet a lot, or is it that overweight people simply use the Internet more?”says Corneel Vandelanotte, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow at Central Queensland University. It's hard to say.But one likely explanation, she adds, is that“people who use the Internet a lot also engage more in other sedentary(需要久坐的)behavior, and that is probably the main cause of their being more likely to be overweight.”

Formal exercise can only partly make up for all the time you spend sitting around.“If I go running three times a week for one hour, but watch TV the rest of my time, I will still be very sedentary,”says Vandelanotte.“I might be fit, which is definitely a good thing, but it might also be that I'm still not spending enough energy on a daily basis.”

It's all about striking a balance between sitting down and moving around. Here are a few ways to keep computer time from undermining a healthy lifestyle:

Set a timer for your computer use, television watching or anything that keeps you on the sofa.Set time limits that will allow you to enjoy the websites or TV shows you like, without leaving time for unnecessary channel surfing that keeps you off your feet.Be an active viewer. When you're watching TV, spend at least some of the time doing something physical.

China has input several billion yuan of money to stop the dirty water waste on the upper and middle area of the Pearl River from polluting the lower reaches of the river, especially the Macao Spe-cial Administrative Region.

The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the upper and middle reaches of the Pearl River has been rapidly urbanized(城市化)and industrialized in recent years, leading to a rise in the amount of urban rubbish to the damage of the land, rivers and atmosphere.

Refuse dumps and special plants in most cities treat rubbish to make it harmless, with 5,800 tons of wastes being burnt, buried or made into fertilizers on a daily basis.

He Suping, a woman engineer with the water re-sources department in Guangxi said, it is imperative for the autonomous region to treat sewage wastes to protect the area's Karst terrain(喀斯特地形)and rain water which brings contact between groundwater and surface water, making groundwater more easily polluted.

The Xijiang River, a branch of the Pearl River which runs from Guangxi to neighboring Guangdong Province, provides fresh water for a number of river-side cities such as Macao, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Zhaoqing, so Guangxi must begin to treat rubbish quickly to protect the water sources, said Liu Chen, a senior engineer with the Ministry of Water Resources.

The government 2001-2006 plan to spend bil-lions of yuan to turn wastes harmless has been mainly provided by national debt payments and overseas in-vestment.So far wastes treatment projects have re-ceived a total of 400 million yuan(48 million US dol-lars)from national debts and 60 million yuan(7.22 million US dollars)from overseas loans(贷款).

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you're “hot”. That's true. The time of the day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it breeds such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You'll be late for work again! “The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but you must stay up later anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up team and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them our the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours.

(1) If a person finds getting up early is a problem, most probably ________.

[ ]

A.he is a lazy person

B.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

C.he is not sure when his energy is low

D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

[ ]

A.Unawareness of energy cycles.

B.Familiar monologues.

C.A change in a family member's energy cycle

D.Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.

(3) If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, be should _________.

[ ]

A.change his energy cycle

B.overcome his laziness

C.get up earlier than usual

D.go to bed earlier

(4) You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will _______.

[ ]

A.help to keep your energy for the day's work

B.help you to control your temper early in the day

C.enable you to concentrate on your routine work
