The American does not join the discussion but watches the other guests. As he looks , he sees a strange expression come over the face of the hostess (女主人). She is staring ahead, her muscle contracting (收缩) slightly. With a slight gesture she summons the native boy standing behind her chair, and whispers to him. The boy listens with wide eyes and he quickly leaves.
Of the guests, none except the American notices this or see the boy place bows of milk just outside the open doors.
