摘要: picking up the phone, I recognized her voice. A. Upon B. At C. With D. As 完形填空 The yearly marathon (a long-distance running race of 42.195 km) in my town usually occurs during a heat wave. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance 16 any of them needed medical attention. “We’re supposed to stay behind the 17 runner, so take it slowly, I said to the driver, Doug, as the race started. The front-runners started to 18 and then my eyes were 19 to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a loose white T-shirt. We knew we were already watching our “last runner. Her 20 were so crippled that it seemed almost impossible for her to be able to walk, 21 alone run a marathon. Doug and I 22 in silence as she slowly moved forward. 23 , she was the only runner left in sight. Tears streamed down my face when I watched with respect 24 she pushed forward with great 25 through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, rubbish lay everywhere and the 26 crowds had long gone home. 27 , standing straight and ever so proud 28 a lone man. He was 29 one end of a ribbon of crepe paper 30 to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the paper fluttering behind her. I do not know this woman’s name, but that day she became a part of my 31 - a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about 32 the other runners or winning a prize, but about 33 what she had set out to do, no matter 34 . When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I-just-can’t-do-it, I think of the last runner. Then I realize how 35 the task before me really is.

It’s you and I who are to blame for the state of the earth. No question about it. It’s our life-style that is threatening life on Earth, so we must make the changes. The good news is that many of those changes are really quite simple, even enjoyable, but for every careful step we take as individuals, we must press government and industry to take a big step on our benefit. And we must start now. Tomorrow’s too late.

My aim this year is to persuade as many of my friends and colleagues as possible to choose the train, and leave their cars behind too. My gardens have been pesticide(杀虫剂)–free zones for years and I enjoy seeing more wildlife on my doorstep as a result; I’ve tried to reduce my contribution to water pollution too, by using environment-friendly, phosphate(磷)–free washing powder , and by no longer thinking of the toilet as a suitable waste-disposal(处理) point .

I ran after a young lady through town recently to give her back the piece of paper she had carelessly thrown away. She disappeared into a shop, and when I followed her inside and made my presentation, she was doubly embarrassed--she worked there, and the boss gave her a ticking–off too. I’ve started asking fellow drivers at gas stations why they aren’t using unleaded (无铅的) petrol . These are small things, but we have to start somewhere, and every little does help.

"Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the

water and felt the rush of energy as waves came over you?" asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh."There is certainly a lot of energy in waves," he said.Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when

winds blow across the ocean."The wind starts out by making little ripples (涟漪) , but if they

keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves," Taylor said." Waves

are one of nature 's ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.

When waves come toward the shore, people can set up dams to block the water and send it

through a large wheel called a turbine (涡轮机) .The turbine can then power an electrical
generator to produce electricity .

"The resource is huge," said Janet Swain of the World watch Institute."We will never run out of wave power." Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal.Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth's surface - that would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.

Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic.

Traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may someday run out." Demand for energy to

power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world," Swain said.In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be

providing the electricity!

64.The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to _______.

A.test the readers' knowledge about waves

B.draw the readers' attention to the topic

       C.show Jamie Taylor's importance

D.invite the readers to answer them
65.The underlined phrase "picking up" (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to _______.

       A.starting again       B.speeding up         C.gathering             D.improving
66.We can make better use of wave energy if we _______.

A.shorten its journey to thousands of homes

B.build more small power stations on the oceans

C.reduce the cost of turning it into electric power

D.quicken the steps of producing electricity

67.It can be inferred that some day we might not worry about ________.

       A.air pollution                                         B.our boat traffic

C.our power supply                                D.our supply of sea fish

Have you ever thought about what you would like to do after school? Perhaps one of these rather different jobs will suit you.

TASTER: Food companies need people to taste the products that they are making. So many kinds of no bad-tasting food are put onto the supermarket shelves. All tasters do all day is take small bites of food. They make notes of what tastes good and what tastes bad. It is not a job for those who would like to stay thin.

SNAKE MILKER: This involves taking the poison out of a snake’s teeth. You hold the snake over a glass and make it open its mouth very wide. The poison will then drip from the back of the teeth into the glass; this is known as milking the snake. You have to be very brave if you want to try this.

GOLF BALL HUNTER: You will spend your day diving into waterholes at different golf courses to hunt for lost golf balls. You could be picking up as many as 5,000 balls a day. Many golfers are willing to buy used golf balls and you could be making a lot of money.

CLOCK CLEANER: Every day you will be climbing to the top of the clock towers in the city. Your responsibilities will be to oil, wind and repair the clocks. This is not a job for someone who is afraid of heights.
