One evening, sitting at the window sewing, my mother called me, “Come here,” she said. “  41  . ” She held my head   42   her stomach, and after a puzzled moment I felt a   43   foot drumming on my cheek. “You see?” she said, “It’s alive. It was as good as a place for the baby to be as any other and I never   45   about why it got in nor how it would finally get out.

As he grew, it became    56   that my brother had been the center of everything. People    57   when they saw him. He made them happy   58   by being there. And he had the sort of childish beauty that always turns heads and draws a second   59  . He was so charming that he was immediately loveable. Later he also turned out to be   60  , although perhaps not quite as clever as I was.

I remember the way the light touched her hair. She turned her head, and our eyes met, a momentary awareness in that noisy fifth grade classroom.I felt as though I’d been stuck a blow under the heart. Thus began my first love affair.

Her name was Rachel, and I mooned my way through the grade and high school, stricken at the mere sight of her, tongue-tied in her presence.Does anyone, anymore, wander in the shadows of evening, drawn by the pale light of a window-her window-like some unlucky summer insect?

Her beauty made me awkward(笨拙的)and my voice crack(沙哑)is like some impossible dream now.I would catch sight of her, walking down an aisle of trees to or from, and I’d be-come a fool. She always seemed so charming.

At home, I’d relive each meeting between us, suffering at the thought of my shortcoming. We eventually got to know as we entered our adolescence, she knew I had a case on her, and I sensed her emotional tolerance for me.“Going steady” implied a maturity we still lacked. Her Orthodox Jewish upbringing and my own Catholic belief made even kissing a distant prospect(前景),however strongly desired.

At any rate, my love for Rachel remained without result. We graduated from high school, she went on to college, and I joined the Army. When World War II broke out, l was sent overseas. For a time we wrote, and her letters were the highlight of those terrible endless years.

I mentioned the possibility of marriage in my nest letter, and almost immediately her replies became less frequent, less personal. Her Dear John letter finally caught up with me while I was awaiting discharge. She gently explained the impossibility of a marriage between us.

Looking back on it, I must have recovered rather quickly, although for the first few months I believed I didn’t want to live.Like Rachel, I found someone else, whom I learned to love with a deep and permanent commitment that has lasted to this day.

PART THREE   READING COMPREHENSION (30%)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage
They say a cat has nine lives, and I think that possible since I am now living my third life and I’m not even a cat. My father died when I was 15, and we had a hard struggle to make a living. And my mother, who was seriously ill in her last years, died while still in her 60s. My sister married soon after, and I followed her example within the year.
This was when I began to enjoy my first life. I was very happy, in excellent health. I had a good job in San Jose and a beautiful home up the peninsula (半岛) in San Carlos. Life was a pleasant dream. Then the dream ended. I became afflicted (使苦恼) with a slowly progressive disease of the motor nerves, affecting first my right arm and leg, and then my other side. Thus began my second life...
In spite of my disease I still drove to and from work each day, with the aid of special equipment installed in my car. And I managed to keep my health and optimism (乐观), to a degree, because of 14 steps. Crazy? Not at all. Our home was an affair with 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door. Those steps were a standard measure of life. They were my yardstick, my challenge to continue living. I felt that if the day arrived when I was unable to lift one foot up one step and then drag the other painfully after it ---repeating the process 14 times, I would be through---I could then admit defeat and lie down and die.
Then on a dark night in August, 1971, I began my third life. It was raining when I started home that night; strong winds and slashing rain beat down on the car as I drove slowly down one of the less-traveled roads. Suddenly the steering wheel jerked (猝然一动). In the same instant I heard the bang of a blowout. It was impossible for me to change that tire! Utterly impossible!
I started the engine and thumped slowly along until I came to the dirt road, where I turned in and where I found lighted windows welcomed me to a house and pulled into the driveway and honked the horn.
The door opened and a little girl stood there. When she knew what happened to me, she went into the house and a moment later came out, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting. I sat there comfortable and dry, and felt a bit sorry for the man and the little girl working so hard in the storm.
About an hour later, the man’s voice was heard, “This is a bad night for car trouble, but you’re all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much do I owe you?” He shook his head, “Nothing. Cynthia told me you were a cripple. Glad to be of help. I know you’d do the same for me. There’s no charge, friend.” I held out a five-dollar bill, “No! I like to pay my way.” He made no effort to take it and the little girl stepped closer to the window and said quietly, “Grandpa can’t see it.”
56. “A cat has nine lives” here means ___________.
A. a cat can live nine times longer than any other animal  B .a cat can die ninth

57. What do you think of the man who helped change the tire?
A. Old, warm-hearted but pitiable
B. Blind, but warm-hearted and happy
C. A blind old man that has nothing to do every day.
D. A poor old man that is always ready to help others.

We thought we had it all-a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars, a couple of four-wheelers for entertainment-and we loved it.Then, the market turned and my husband's job at a construction company was gone. The company was closing down for good.

We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren't any to be found. With each passing day we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got.I felt feelings of admiration for my husband that I hadn't felt in years.

That's why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation.I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job.

Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said,“We have four healthy children and each other. That's what's important. That makes you a rich man.”“But what if we lose the house? They'll hate me-you'll hate me,”he replied.

I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye.“No matter where we live I will be happy-as long as I have you.”I smiled again. In all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said“I do”.

I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn't for quite some time.It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family.
