What I noticed first about my new parrot, Chico, was that he couldn’t fly. His wings had been cut short and he was stuck on the1just like us humans. When the weather turned nice, I took Chico outside. I sat him on a branch of a tree, hoping to make him2. At first he seemed3. He walked back and forth on the branch looking anxious or nervous. He didn’t even flap his wings in an attempt to fly. Somehow he knew he was4.
One day Chico got especially excited . He paced back and forth and made an incredible amount of5. Then all of a sudden he stopped and let out an even louder scream. He started6flapping his wings for the first time ever - then he lifted off the7like a space shuttle! I was amazed and8. Little did I know his feathers had been growing back, and Chico had been9until the moment was ripe for escape!
Two days later Chico10. First I tried to trick him back with food, but he would not come near me. Then I took his11and put it away—still he would not come. Finally, I made him a firm promise that I would let him12every day the weather was nice if he did come back.13, he flew onto my shoulder.
From that day on, whenever the weather was good I would let him out early and he would fly around and be back before dark. The14lasted for two months before suddenly Chico became15. The vet said that he had been infected with a disease from the pigeons in the neighborhood. Within a few days he died.
I was very sad. The16crossed my mind that if I had not set him free to fly, he would be still alive. But what17is there in being a bird if you can’t fly?
Chico made his first break for 18on a late Monday afternoon in April. When will you make yours? You too can take a19when the conditions are right, knowing you too, in your own way, were built to fly. If you don’t20, what will be the purpose of your life?

I lay there buried alive under our house when the bomb hit our city. The great1started by the bomb came nearer and nearer to us as workers tried to2us. “Hurry!” they cried to one another as the flames (火焰) came nearer. At last they reached us and3me and my mother out from under everything4the flames reached us.
Later, as I thought of the pilot of the plane that5the bomb on our city, I cried, “I hate him. I hate him.” The people with marked faces from the 6of the bomb made me cry, “I hate him.” I saw people suffering (遭受) a terrible, 7death. Again and again I cried as I saw these people, “I hate him!”
Some time later, that man appeared in a meeting I8.As I looked at him, I 9him very much. Then I listened to what he told us of his 10the day when he dropped the bomb on our city. I heard him say, “When I flew over the city11we dropped the bomb, I cried, ‘Oh, God, what have I12’.” I could see that he found it 13to speak of that day.
As this happened I suddenly 14my hatred (仇恨) of him was 15. It only made me unhappy also. As I did this, it was as if a heavy load (负担)16my shoulders. Then I decided to 17him. I did so and my life was18.
I now help those who suffer from19other people. I try to help them to20everyone, as I am now able to do.

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Sibson’s bedroom skylight(天窗).Sibson was shaken by a clap of thunder1 he knew what was happening. The storm had moved directly2 his two-story wooden house. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping.
Sibson rushed down the stairs barefoot to3; he opened the door to the basement(地下室), and flames4out. Sibson ran back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom. “I felt 5because the room had a separate outdoor stairway,” he explains.
But the phone didn’t work, and when he tried to go down the outdoor stairway, he was6by a wall of flames. Sibson realized he was trapped(困住).
Sibson’s house was three kilometers7the main road and was so well hidden by trees that he knew calling for help would be8.
Up a hill nearby lived Sibson’s neighbor, Huggons. He was lying in bed when something like a smoke alarm9his ears. He jumped out of bed, took his10and flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the11. That was when he saw the rolling heavy smoke.
Huggons dialed 911, and the operator warned him not to12the house. But Huggons said, “There is no way I am going to listen to Sibson 13and die in that fire.”
“Anyone there?” Huggons called out. Then he heard “Help! I’m trapped!” coming from the second floor balcony(阳台). He entered the house, but soon had to run back to catch his14.
After one more15inside the house, Huggons gave up and16around back.
The wind parted the smoke just17for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him. He18the flashlight into the woods and noticed a ladder. He took it over to the balcony and19Sibson down just as the second floor of the house fell off.
Sibson is still20when he tells the story. “ I was alone that night,” he says. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life. It was Huggons.”

I was feeling a little blue. My mother had been laid off from her job, but she said she was OK since her boss wasn't the nicest person 1.
I got off the college bus and started walking. That's 2 heard piano music and singing rising above the 3of the people and the traffic. I walked a little slower 4I could find out where it was coming from. 5the crowd I saw a young lady sitting at a piano with a 6next to her, singing songs about love. The way she was singing 7me a bit. I stood there watching her 8for about fifteen minutes, thinking that it must take 9to perform on her own in public.
Feeling my presence, she looked in my 10. I walked over and put some money in her carriage. “I have been going through a 11time lately, but you’ve made me hopeful again.”
"I'm happy that I could 12. Why are you so sad?"
"Well, my mum had got 13from her job, but I’m not sure what to do….”
"You see, the way you were 14," she explained. “Don't look defeated, 15 come in different ways. If your head is down you might never see it. Smile more ... 16 your head up."
I smiled slightly, amazed by how she was 17me.
“Why are you playing here?” I asked.
“I am not making music. I study psychology. I often see many 18people and hope to relieve their 19and make them think positively by sharing music.”
I smiled a little wider. She was doing a good thing. My heart was touched by a 20soul.
