But this system, in which brothers and sisters take the place of the father, no longer exists in South India except in a few villages.Economic changes have had far-reaching effect on family life.Family left began to change when men went out to work in factories and offices instead of working with their mothers, brothers and sisters on the land. When a man went out to work he had money of his own and could buy his own land and build his own family, instead of depending on his mothers and his brothers. He wanted to be independent(独立).This is an example of the way in which economic relations can have an effect on family relationships.

Here in Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were passed to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.

A wolf naturally lives on animals in the deer family. People there also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the plant life there. When the deer can't find enough food, they die.

IF the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, the deer will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the life cycle there. If we killed more wolves, we would save them from starving. We also save deer and some farm animals.

In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the United States government to send a team of scientists to study the problem. They believe it is necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small population.

1.In Alaska, laws have been passed to ________.

[ ]

A.protect people from wolves and deer

B.protect wolves from becoming dangerous

C.keep wolves from killing large numbers of deer

D.protect wolves from dying out

[ ]

A.Because wolves mainly live on deer.

B.Because the wolves will have no deer to kill.

C.Because people will kill them for punishment.

D.Because killing deer is dangerous

3.In order to protect more deer from being killed, one way is to ________.

[ ]

B.Wolves should be protected, for there's a small population of it on earth.

The orangutan (猩猩) is one of the four remaining kinds of man-like apes (类人猿) left in the world today. Orangutans are found only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They are growing fewer. There is a danger they may die out.

Until the time between the wars, few orangutans were kept in zoos. Little was known about them, As people came to know their gentle and interesting ways, they became more popular. Every zoo wanted to have some of them, but the number of orangutans in the world was small.

After the last war, the natives found they could make a lot of money by catching and selling young orangutans. Fully-grown and half-grown orangutans were much too strong to be taken. The only known way of catching the young was to shoot the parents first. This meant that orangutans were lost to wild life for every-one caught, it also meant that fewer orangutans were born. Once caught the young were so badly looked after that at least half of them died. They were usually sold to someone who knew little about looking after them.
