Wherever in the world you’re reading this right now, you will be aware of just how mixed modern society has become in terms of race. Within the UK, mixed-raced children are the largest   1  ethnic minority. Bringing home a partner of a different   2  to yourself is no longer viewed as, “strange” or “different” in a lot of families. When Joseph brought home Hari, the   3  that she was of Indian parentage was never even talked about — she made him happy. They made each other happy. And that was all that   4 .

But the reason why they were together for 11 years before they got   5  is that Hari was afraid of telling her   6  about the person that she’d fallen in love with. She was afraid of the consequences it would   7  for her younger sisters. Would they be packed off to India? Would they end up in arranged   8  they may not want? At 22 years old, when she first fell in love with him — it was a large burden to   9 .

But she loved him, and   10  they moved in together… and then bought a house by the Brighton coast, where they have   11  for almost 8 years. All the while her parents didn’t know. Her sisters did, and they too loved Joseph — they   12  him as the brother they’d never had.

But after nine years together, she finally had to tell her father (her mother   13  away a few years ago). We were on tenderhooks(惶恐不安)the weekend she went up North to tell him.

It was emotional and as a family we were worried. Hari had been   14  of our family for so long, we felt for her. We knew how   15  it would be. She loved her father, but knew this would hurt him, who was a very traditional Sikh man.

We were on tour a few summers ago, driving through Chicago, when right outside of the city, we got pulled over. A middle-aged policeman came up to the car and was really being troublesome at first. Lecturing us, he said, “You were speeding. Where are you going in such a hurry?” Our guitarist, Tim, told him that we were on our way to Wisconsin to play a show. His way towards us totally changed. He asked, “Oh, so you boys are in a band(乐队)?” We told him that we were. He then asked all the usual band questions about the type of music we played, and how long we had been at it. Suddenly, he stopped and said, “Tim, you want to get out of this ticket, don’t you?” Tim said, “Yes.” So the officer asked him to step out of the car. The rest of us, inside the car, didn’t know what to think as we watched the policeman talk to Tim. Next thing we knew, the policeman was putting Tim in the back of the police car he had parked in front of us. With that, he threw the car into reverse(倒车),stopping a few feet in back of our car. Now we suddenly felt frightened. We didn’t know if we were all going to prison, or if the policeman was going to sell Tim on the black market or something. All of a sudden, the policeman’s voice came over his loudspeaker. He said, “Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time ever, we have Tim here singing on Route 90.” Turns out, the policeman had told Tim that the only way he was getting out of the ticket was if he sang part of one of our songs over the loudspeaker in the police car. Seconds later, Tim started screaming into the receiver. The policeman enjoyed the performance, and sent us on our way without a ticket.

My basketball coach at Princeton used to say, "On the court, you can tell who is selfish(自私的)."

When my sister Michelle brought Barack Obama home to meet the family, she said to me, "I want you to take him out to play, to see what type of man he is when he’s not around me." So I invited Barack to play basketball with a few friends of mine.

I was very nervous although I had already met Barack a few times. I was thinking this guy seemed like a good guy. We played a hard five-on-five. He was thin but not weak. He played extremely left-handed. He dealt with everything perfectly. He wasn’t the best guy out there or the worst guy. I liked the fact that he was confident but wasn’t proud. Barack was very team-oriented (有团队精神的), very unselfish. He played as if he was one of us —he wasn’t trying to be president of Harvard Law Review. But the best part about it was that when we were on the same team, he did not pass me the ball each time. He wasn’t trying to suck up to my sister through me. I was glad to give my sister the good news, "Your boy is straight."

He isn’t selfish, which is the greatest praise you can give both a player and a leader. America has got a guy who is running a government in an efficient (有效率的) manner. That’s the same guy I got to know playing basketball when he was visiting my family.

1. Why does the author begin the passage with his coach’s words?

 A. He wants to remember and thank his coach.

 B. He wants to show that he is a basketball player.

 C. He wants to tell his sister about the words.

 D. He wants to use the words to test a person.

2.Why did Michelle ask the author to take Barack to play basketball?

 A. To see whether he was confident.

 B. To see whether he was good at sports.

 C. To see whether he was selfish or not.

 D. To see whether he could get along with others.

3.During the basketball game, Barack ______.

 A. played best all the time        B. was strong enough to play

 C. was not confident             D. wanted to be the team leader

4. The underlined phrase in the third paragraph can be replaced by "______".

 A. please (使满意)   B. know about       C. help       D. look for
