Prana, our beautiful dog whose name means ¡°breath of life¡±, isn't with us anymore. But, she brought such joy and love into our lives that we still miss her.

There are so many wonderful stories about the ¡¡36 in this dog, but my ¡¡37¡¡ is this one:

It was an autumn day in Minnesota. But, the¡¡ 38 didn't seem to know the difference between fall and winter. ¡¡39 , we were 40 with a big snow fall 41 which no one was prepared.

We have two apple trees in our backyard. Prana loved apples. When she went outside, she'd take hold of an apple, stick it far back in her 42 , and sneak it into the house to 43 for eating later. The apples had been on the ground and were often muddy so I wasn't always¡¡ 44 that Prana had brought them into the house. ¡¡ 45¡¡ my disapproval, she would turn her head so I wouldn't see her hidden ¡¡46¡¡ .It was our little ¡¡47¡¡ .

On the day that it snowed too early in the season, Prana went outside and I ¡¡48 her from the window. I ¡¡49 that she was madly digging holes and ¡¡50 the apples to the surface so they could be seen ¡¡51 ¡¡the snow. I wondered why she was doing this. She seemed to be completely ¡¡ 52 with some kind of important task to dig up as many apples as possible during her yard time.

When I called her back into the house, she had her ¡¡53 one apple in her mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The yard was completely covered with ¡¡54 . Prana had dug up all those apples for her bird and squirrel friends to eat. She knew that they wouldn't have stored enough food to¡¡ 55 such an early winter!

A feeling of excitement overcame me as I looked around the stadium.

At 5:30 pm, two hours before game time, I walked into the locker room. My ¡¡1¡¡ of school, music and what I planned to do on Saturday night were ¡¡2¡¡ with the simple aim to beat the football team across the field from us tonight.

Approaching my locker, I noticed my teammates ¡¡3 . Some rested on benches, staring up at the ceiling ¡¡4¡¡ it were a film of the opposing team¡¯s play. Some seemed a bit more¡¡ 5 , using the time to tell jokes. A few stared at the field,¡¡ 6¡¡ what will happen in 120 minutes.

Our coach, Tony Severino, came out of his office at 6 o¡¯clock. He told the team how¡¡ 7¡¡ this game was for the season, between two of the state¡¯s top teams¡ªmy school and our opposing team, Liberty High School. His words gave the team impulse (³å¶¯) it needed to¡¡ 8 .

At 7:10 pm, warm-ups finished, we went over the game¡¡ 9¡¡ and discussed what we needed to do for the next three hours. The sound of the national anthem £¨×¯ÑÏÕýʽµÄ¸èÇú£© 10¡¡ that we were only minutes from the action. Our coach usually made a final¡¡ 11 . But tonight was different. On this clear night he¡¡ 12 looked around the room at all the players and shouted, ¡°Let¡¯s go and get them.¡± Even ¡¡13¡¡ the ¡°get¡± came out of his mouth, we were already ¡¡14 our way out of the door.

Outside, a few young fans reached to touch our hands, eager to be a ¡¡15 of our school¡¯s winning tradition. When I smiled and ¡¡16 my hand, the young faces lit up as if they had just met Superman.

Seconds later, the team ran onto the¡¡ 17 , moving as a mass of blue, in front of a packed stadium. We enjoyed a noisy ¡¡18¡¡ from fans and the fight song played by our school band. Breathing in the ¡¡19¡¡ of one of the biggest game of the year, I felt we were sure to win. I told myself, ¡°This was what it was all about¡± and ¡¡20 that it was for moments like this that I loved high school football.

¡¡¡¡Recently I was invited to a friend¡¯s house for supper and had a meal I¡¯d never had before!

All the friends ¡¡26 were a little surprised. It¡¯s not that Ben is unsociable, or a bad cook, ¡¡27 it¡¯s just that he never spends more than he has to. So how come he was inviting us round for a meal? Had he bought anything ¡¡28 for his friends? He greeted us at the ¡¡29 and showed us into his dining-room ¡¡30 a laid table was waiting for us. ¡°Nothing but the best for my friends!¡± said Ben. We all felt ¡¡31 . What was he up to?

¡¡¡¡¡¡ Ben returned with four bowls of hot soup. ¡°It¡¯s a ¡¡32 of carrots, potatoes and tomatoes,¡± said Ben. The next course was also a little ¡¡33 in that£¨ÒòΪ£©we didn¡¯t quite know what it was again. ¡°It¡¯s just another mixture of vegetables.¡±

¡¡¡¡¡¡ 34 we ate, we chatted and finally the ¡¡35 turned back to what we were eating. ¡°Was there a recipe£¨Ê³Æ×£© for this,¡± asked Mary, ¡°or did you make it up?¡± Ben put his ¡¡36 down. What I cooked depended on what I could find.¡± Mary was ¡¡ 37 . ¡°But you can find anything in the supermarkets these days.¡± ¡°But there is less choice in what you can find ¡¡38 the supermarkets,¡± he replied.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ 39 that we had all finished the food, Ben decided to tell the ¡¡40 . He had read recently that supermarkets usually ¡¡41 away 5 percent of their food every day. So Ben decided to look inside his local supermarket bins. There he found food that was slightly out of ¡¡42 , boxes of thrown-away vegetables and fruit.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ So Ben had successfully provided a ¡¡43 for his friends, and made us ¡¡44 the fact that there are many people who need the food, but the amount of food thrown away is enough to ¡¡45 millions of people.

Now satellites are helping to forecast(Ô¤±¨)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(´óÆø), because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(ÆøÏóѧ¼Ò)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

The weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.
