Do you wake up in the morning dreading the moment that your feet have to hit the floor for you to get
ready for work? If that's the case, join most of Americans. Very few people wake up to that an noying alarm
clock and spring out of bed excited about having to go to work.
As if that were not enough, most of us have to fight traffic get- ting there, usually an hour's drive. Then,
when we get to work, we have to fight with unruly co-workers or a nagging boss. And to make matters worse, you have to fight the same traffic going in the oppo site direction just to get back home.
Making dinner, fixing plates, eating and then straightening up afterwards is a job within itself. If that sounds
like your life, you probably have a J-O-B. You know what J-O-B stands for? Just Over Broke, that's what!
With a job, most Americans are living pay- check-to-paycheck and hating every minute of it. I know because
I was doing the same thing: trading time for money. And, I came to a conclusion that it stinks (糟糕透了)! Big
time!
Looking around at my co-workers, friends and relatives, I saw that they were all doing the same thing I
was doing. They were com plaining about the same things I was complaining about: not having enough time
or money. And, I decided that I wanted to do something different.
So, I started a home-based business. There are several to choose from. The extra income has done so
much for our family. We can vacation more. We have been able to give more. And, we've e ven been able to
do something calling save! It's been amazing.
Therefore, if you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, it's time you make a change, too. The definition
of insanity (疯狂) is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I know you aren't
stupid. If you continue to do what everyone else is doing: trading time for money, you're going to keep getting
what eve ryone else is getting: being broke and not having the time to do what is really important to you.
Do your due diligence? Find a home-based business that works well for you. Go to work, and live the life
you've always imag ined!

“If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives-the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因的)engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do-as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read-sport and international news. etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

In the writer’s opinion, in the future,          .

  A. more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news

  B. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer

  C. newspapers will cover more scientific research

  D. more and more people will watch TV

From the passage, we can infer that           .

  A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media

  B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media

  C. television will take the place of the newspaper

  D. the writer believes some media will die out

The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means “        ”.

  A. depend on          B. compete with         C. fight with       D. kill off

What is the best title for the passage?

  A. The Best Way to Get News.              B. The Changes of Media.

  C. Make Your Own newspaper.               D. The Future of Newspaper.

Gene technology to benefit people

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.

The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.

Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being a good example, have hereditary(遗传的) diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born.

Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.

What does "these two killers" in the second paragraph refer to?

A. gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.

B. The two murderers who killed the cloned baby

C. The two diseases of cancer and heart disease

D. Hereditary diseases and cancer

What's the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases.

B. Gene technology can be used to clone human babies.

C. Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby.

D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out

In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases?

A. Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days.

B. Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it.

C. Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.

D. Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.

What is the main purpose of writing this passage?

A. Expressing the writer's idea that gene technology will benefit people

B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology

C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people

D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity

Whatever our differences as human beings are we all think we’re more like the rest of the animal world than we realize. It is said that we share 40 per cent of our genetic(遗传的)structure with the simple worm.

But that fact has helped Sir John Sulston win the 2002 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Sir John is the founder of the Sanger Institute in Cambridge, which was set up in 1992 to get further understanding of the human genome(染色体组).

To help them do this, they turned to the worm. The nematode(线虫类的)worm is one of the earliest creatures on planet earth. It is less than one millimeter long, completely transparent and spends its entire life digging holes through sand. But it still has lots to say about human life, and what can be done to make it better.

What the worm told Sir John and his colleagues was that each of the cells in the human body is programmed like a computer. They grow, develop and die according to a set of instructions that are coded in our genetic make-up.

Many of the diseases that humans suffer from happen when these instructions go wrong or are not obeyed. When the cell refuses to die but carries on growing instead, this leads to cancer. Heart attacks and diseases like AIDS cause more cell deaths than normal, increasing the damage they do to the body. Sir John was the first scientist to prove the existence of programmed cell death.

Sir John Sulston got a Nobel Prize for Medicine because he has         .

A.found that human beings are similar to the worm

B.got the fact we share 40 per cent of our genetic structure with the simple worm

C.found the computer which controls each of the cells in the human body

D.proved that cell death is programmed

People might be seriously ill if the cells in their body        .

A.grow without being instructed B.die regularly

C.fail to follow people’s instructions  D.develop in the human body

The underlined word“they”(paragraph 5)refers to        .

A.cell deaths       B.diseases    C.instructions      D.cells

What is the subject discussed in the text?

A.The theory of programmed cell deaths.     B.A great scientist—Sir John Sulston.

C.The programmed human life.             D.Dangerous diseases.
