Having friends may well keep you healthier and help you deal with stress better. Some studies show that people with close friends have a greater ability to fight disease than people who are alone.

Make friendship a priority. Find the time to be with friends even if it means letting the grass in your garden uncut or the dishes unwashed for a while. When you can’t get together, use the phone to keep in touch.

Open up to close friends. Maintaining a deep friendship requires a level of “heartfelt” intimacy (亲密). Don’t be afraid to express your inner fears and disappointments. Listen to your friends when they have problems, but offer advice only when it’s wanted. Help raise friends’ self-esteem (自尊)when they are shaken by a job loss, or other such events.

Have different friends for different activities, such as going to the movies, singing in a choir, and joining in a bowling league.

Don’t wait for a friend to ask a favor. When a friend has the flu, offer to go to the store or drive his or her children to their afterschool activities.

Never take a friendship for granted. Like a good marriage, friendship needs care and patience. Become a joiner. Find a group that matches your interests.

Talk to strangers. Conversations started in museums, laundry rooms,or bookstores can lead to firm friendship.

Enroll in an adulteducation course. A classroom is an ideal place to meet others with similar interests.

There is no doubt that watching television can influence the way that people behave. Moreover, it seems that people are spending more and more time watching some sort of visual entertainment, whether it is television, a video tape or a DVD. Therefore, the effects of visual media cannot be ignored.
One obvious effect of these media is that watching them induces people to buy certain products. Television advertising is widespread and, nowadays, even movie theaters permit advertisements. Another way TV and the movies affect people is that they give people either a    broader view of the world or a distorted one, depending on what type of program they watch.         Those who watch news and educational program can learn many new things while those who watch primarily entertainment shows may come to believe that most people in the world possess   great wealth and good looks. It may make them become dissatisfied with their own lives. Finally, perhaps the most susceptible viewers are children, who may be unable to tell fact from fiction and   may try to imitate acts that they see on TV or in the movies. And this is just what most parents and our society are worried about.
With the every-increasing popularity of video entertainment, we must pay attention to these effects.

We have seen that pesticides(杀虫剂)now pollute soil, water, and food, and that they have the power to make our rivers fishless and our gardens and woodlands silent and birdless. Man, however much he may like to pretend the opposite, is part of nature. Can he escape a pollution that is now so thoroughly spread throughout our world?

We know that even single exposure(暴露) to these chemicals, if the amount is large enough, can cause extremely severe poisoning. But this is not the major problem. The sudden illness or death of farmers, farm workers, and others exposed to enough quantities of pesticides is very sad and should not happen. For the population as a whole, we must pay more attention to the delayed effects of taking in small amounts of the pesticides that unseeably pollute our world.

Responsible(负责的) public health officials have pointed out that the biological effects of chemicals are increasing in amount over long periods of time, and that the danger to man may depend on the amount of the exposures received throughout his lifetime. For these very reasons people easily take no notice of the danger. It is human nature to shake off what may seem to us a future disaster(灾害). "Men are naturally most impressed by diseases which have obvious signs," says a wise physician, Dr. Rene Dubos, "yet some of their worst enemies slowly come near them unnoticed."

Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?

A. Man doesn't care about what happens in nature.

B. Man acts as if he does not belong to nature.

C. Man can avoid the effects of environmental pollution.

D. Man can escape his responsibilities for environmental protection.

People are likely to take no notice of the delayed effects of exposure to chemicals because________.

A. limited exposure to them does little harm to people's health

B. the present is more important to them than the future

C. the danger does not become seen clearly and immediately

D. humans are able to bear small amounts of poisoning

It can be concluded from what Dr. Dubos says that________.

A. people find hidden diseases difficult to deal with

B. attacks by hidden enemies are likely to be deadly

C. diseases with obvious signs are easy to cure

D. people are likely to take no notice of hidden dangers caused by pesticides
