Is there anything more important than health?I don't think so.“Health is the greatest wealth,”wise people say. 1

If you have a headache, toothache, backache, or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you go to the doctor.

The doctor will examine your throat, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. 2 .The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.

    3

An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill.He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. 4 .In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule:“Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.”The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn't smoke more than one cigarette a day.

A month later the gentleman came into the doctor's office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.

“But you know, doctor,”he said,“it's not easy to begin smoking at my age”

A.He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks.

B.You can't be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.

C.After that he will advise some treatment or some medicine.

D.All these will cost a lot of money.

E.He was more worried about his illness.

F.Speaking about doctor's advice, I can't help telling you a funny story.

How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and the old wishing they were young again! Each age has its pleasure and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting any time in useless regrets.

Childhood is a time when there are few duties to make life hard.If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after, and loved whatever he may do.It’s impossible for him to be given so much again in his life without having to do anything in return.Besides, life is always giving new things to the child.A child finds pleasure in playing in the rain, or in the snow. His first visit to the seaside makes him wild. But a child has his pains:he is not free to act as he wishes. He is continually being told not to do this, not to do that, or being punished for what he has done wrong. His life is therefore not perfectly happy.

When the young man starts to make his own living, he becomes free from the discipline(约束)of school and parents. But at the same time he is forced to accept duties. He can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the law of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, has truth in mind, and has good health, he can have the great happiness of seeing himself make steady progress in his job and of building up his own position in society.

Old age has always been thought of as the worst age, but it is not necessary for the old to be unhappy. With old age should come wisdom and the ability to help others with advice. They can have the joy of seeing their children making progress in life; they can watch their grandchildren growing up around them and, perhaps, best of all, they can, if their life has been a useful one, feel the happiness of having come through the battle of life safely and of having reached a time when they can lie back and rest, leaving others to continue the fight.(421words)

Meaning of Happiness

"Are you happy?" I asked my brother, Lan, one day,

"Yes.No.It depends what you mean," he said.

"Then tell me," I said, "when was the last time you think you were happy?"

  "April 1967,"he said,

It served me right for putting a serious question to someone who has joked his way through life. But Lan's answer reminded me that when we think about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, a pinnacle(顶点)of sheer(纯粹的)delight, 1

2 I remember playing police and robbers in the woods, getting a speaking part in the school play.Of course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at such peaks of pleasure as winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved.

In the teenage years, the concept of happiness changes. 3 I can still feel the pain of not being invited to a party that almost everyone else was going to.I also remember the great happiness of being invited at another event to dance with a very handsome young man.

In adulthood the things that bring great joy-birth, love, marriage-also bring responsibility and the risk of loss.Love may not last; loved ones die.For adults, happiness is complex.

My dictionary defines "happy" as "lucky" or "fortunate".But I think a better definition of happiness is "the ability to enjoy something". 4 It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, even good health.

While happiness may be more complex for us, the solution is the same as ever.Happiness isn't about what happens to us; it's the ability to find a positive for every negative, and view a difficulty as a challenge. 5

A.For a child, happiness has a magic quality.

B.You never know where happiness will turn up next.

C.So we chase it and make it equal to wealth and success.

D.And those pinnacles seem to get rarer, the older we get.

E.The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are.

F.It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.

G.Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love, and popularity.
