What I Want for You and Every Child in America

Dear Malia and Sasha,

　 I know that you've both had a lot of 1 these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have．But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy（小狗）, it doesn't 2 for all the time we've been apart．I know 3 I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey．

　 When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me, about how I'd 4　 my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want．But then the two of you came into my 5 with all your curiosity and mischief （捣乱） and those smiles that never 6 to fill my heart and light up my day．

　 She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better and that the 17 work of perfecting our union falls to each of us．It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to 18 we know America should be．

　 These are the things I want for you, to 19 in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach．And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive （茁壮成长） that you girls have．That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure．

When I was 17，I read a quote that went something like：“If you live each day as if it were your last，someday you’ll most certainly be right” It made a deep   1 on me, and since then, for the past 33 years，I have  2 in the mirror every morning and asked myself：“If today were the last day of my life，  3 I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a 4 ，I know I need to change something．
Remembering that I’ll be   5  soon is the most important tool I’ve ever known to help me make the big 6 in life because almost everything falls away in the face of death，  7 only what is truly important.
About a year ago I was  8 with cancer. My doctor even advised me to go home and get my affairs  9 order，which is a doctor’s way of telling people to prepare to die．I  10 with that diagnosis all day．  11 ，at last an advanced test showed that it was a very rare cancer that is  12 with surgery．I had the surgery and I’m fine now.
 13 wants to die．Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all  14 ．No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be，because death is very likely the single best invention of   15 ．It is life's change agent. It clears out the old to   16  for the new．Right now the new is you．But someday not too  17  from now，you will gradually become the old and be cleared away．Sorry to be so dramatic，but it is quite true.
Your time is  18 ，so don’t waste it living someone else’s 1ife．Don’t be  19 by dogma (教条) —which is living with the results of other people’s thinking．Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner   20 ．And most importantly，have the courage to follow your heart.

Skateboarding has become one of several non - traditional activities that PE teachers around America are introducing to inspire kids to exercise regularly. Some PE classes feature in-line (滚轮) skating, yoga, and even rock climbing. Experts have called those types of activities “the new PE”.
Such activities are part of a larger effort to help kids develop lifelong fitness habits and to keep them from becoming overweight. Now, 9 million U.S. children and teens are overweight. Obesity (肥胖) can lead to health problems such as diabetes and heart disease later in life.
“Our children and youth are becoming unhealthy and obese,” says Lindsey Johnson. “Skateboarding is a great activity that keeps kids doing physical movement and gives them new skills and interest.”
Some schools don’t allow skateboarding because they say it is dangerous. Cendali, however, argues that regular practice eliminates a great deal of the danger. “We teach students how to do it and how to do it safely,” he says.
Some people say skateboarding teaches life lessons. “Skateboarding teaches kids to believe that if they stick with something they will finally succeed,” says education expert Richard Sagor of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
Skateboarding inspires kids not to give up in learning difficult skills. “It’s natural for kids to want to learn and get better at things,” adds Sagor. “When it comes to skateboarding, they’ll try a trick hundreds of times before they succeed.” That same effort could be made in schoolwork.
Eric Klassen agrees that skateboarding requires kids to stop saying a task is too hard for them. “A baby will attempt to walk 600 to 900 times before he or she is successful,” says Klassen. “We tell students that they shouldn’t say ‘I can’t do it’ unless they’ve tried 600 to 900 times.”
