Kuwait is a country which is quite small, but which is very rich. It has a population of a little more than a million and it is situated at the north end of the Persian Gulf, between Iraq on the north and Saudi Arabia on the south. This small desert country is one of the world's leading oil producers and it has about 15 percent of the world's known petroleum reserves. Since the discovery of oil in 1938, Kuwait rulers have turned the country into a prosperous welfare state. It has free primary and secondary education, free health care and social services, and the Kuwaitis do not have to pay any personal income tax for those services. The rate of literacy is high and constantly growing. The University of Kuwait was opened in 1966. but many of the Kuwaiti students still study in colleges and universities abroad, at state expense. Kuwait is an Arab country, and about 99 percent of the people who live there are Moslems. But fewer than half of these Moslems are actually citizen of Kuwait. This is because there are many Moslem immigrants (移民) living and working there. The other 1 percent of the population, in other words the non-Moslems, are recent immigrants who were attracted (吸引) by the opportunities to work for the oil companies. There are several thousand Europeans and Americans in Kuwait. Many of them are employed by the oil companies.

Protecting China’s Giant P and as

China’s giant pandas show the achievement of the international effort to save animals that are now in danger. In television programs we often see pandas 1 funny games.Children have panda toys and beautiful cards with pictures of lovely 2 in them. They often visit the giant pandas in the zoo on 3 holidays and have a good time there. However, scientists are worried about the 4 of giant pandas. They know only about 1000 giant pandas remain 5 today. They think the giant panda will die out in 30 years if the present conditions are not 6

It is reported that the giant pandas have a very 7 birthrate.About 115 pandas live in zoos and research centers mainly in China, but during the past 10 years they 8 only 34 9 pandas that are still alive.Survival rate for giant pandas in the wild are probably?the same or lower.

There are several reasons for the low 10 .The main reason is 11 male pandas can make love with females in a very 12 season-only a few days a year. When they do have babies, females often produce two pandas, but the mother is usually not able to care for 13 of them. The newborn pandas 14 only a few kilograms each. They are too weak to live without special care.In the zoo, scientists can help the mothers 15 the young pandas, but those living in the wild do not get enough 16 .It is very difficult for mother pandas to bring up their young pandas.

Conditions for the giant pandas have been worse in recent years.Pandas in China continue to 17 in number. We know pandas live on bamboos. But sometimes all the bamboos in one area die.The pandas there have 18 to eat and die of hunger.

Giant pandas now live in 13 separate 19 areas in China.Several years ago the Chinese government and the International Wild Life Organization agreed 20 a project of protecting giant pandas in the wild.We hope it could be helpful.

Smartphone Security Blankets

Security-for the information on your smartphone, as well as for the phone itself-is a hot topic these days. The truth is that you're packing a lot of sensitive information on your phone, and you should keep it safe.

When it comes to physical security, iPhone users would do well to download Find My iPhone, a free app(application program)from Apple that allows you to visit a website and see your(lost, stolen or misplaced)phone on a map.You can then sound an alarm, send a message that will pop up on its screen, lock the phone or erase all your data.

Android does not have an exact equivalent, but there are plenty of alternatives.A free app called Lookout offers the find-my-phone feature. The paid version allows you to wipe the data from your phone remotely.

Then there is your coffee shop's WiFi network.Anyone with minimal technical expert skill can snoop on(窥视)people using shared wireless networks, harvesting passwords and other personal data.Lookout's apps will caution you when you've logged on to an unsecure network, but cannot protect you once you're there.

In order to protect yourself on such networks, you can use a virtual private network, or V.P.N.This turns all your activity into nonsense to anyone trying to read along with you from across the Starbucks. It also keeps websites from tracking you and, if you're traveling, allows you to get access to sites that may be blocked in other countries.

If you have an iPhone, the simplest V.P.N.app is probably Hotspot Shield, whose distinguishing feature is said to be that it automatically kicks in each time you start browsing(浏览), as opposed to other V.P.N.apps that require you to start them up manually. This matters, because even if you decide you want a V.P.N.app, you want to spend approximately zero time thinking about it.For the most part, that was true of Hotspot Shield, though occasionally it took a while to connect or temporarily lost connection without warning.I found myself having to turn the app on and off sometimes, which involved setting my phone constantly.

If even reading about the settings on your phone drives you crazy, then it is probably best to stay away from a V.P.N.app.But if you're the type who can't resist checking your bank balance from your corner bar, the hassle may be preferable to the risk.

(1)

Which of the following can warn you against the unsecure network?

[ ]

A.

Android.

B.

V.P.N.

C.

Lookout.

D.

Find My iPhone.

(2)

By using V.P.N., users can ________.

[ ]

A.

find their lost phone on the Internet

B.

erase all the data from the phone remotely

C.

check their bank balance now and then

D.

save their browsing from being tracked

(3)

The underlined word “that” in Para.6 refers to the fact that ________.

[ ]

A.

a V.P.N.app kicks in automatically

B.

the user starts V.P.N.apps manually

C.

the app takes a while to connect

D.

users spend no time thinking about it
