Some years ago when I was in my first year in college, I heard Salome Bey sing for the first time. The moment was exciting. Salome¡¯s ¡¡36 filled the room and brought the theater to life. I was so ¡¡37 that I decided to write an article about her.

I ¡¡38 Salome Bey, telling her I was from Essence magazine, and that I wanted to meet her to talk about her career. She ¡¡39 and told me to come to her studio next Tuesday. When I hung up, I was scared out of my mind. I ¡¡40 I was lying. I was not a writer at all and hadn¡¯t even written a grocery list.

I interviewed Salome Bey the next Tuesday. I sat there ¡¡41 , taking notes and asking questions that all began with, ¡°Can you tell me¡¡± I soon realized that ¡¡42 Salome Bey was one thing, but writing a story for a national magazine was just impossible. The ¡¡43 was almost unbearable. I struggled for days ¡¡44 draft after draft. Finally I put my manuscript (ÊÖ¸å) into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.

It didn¡¯t take long. My manuscript ¡¡45 . How stupid of me! I thought. How could I ¡¡46 in a world of professional writers? Knowing I couldn¡¯t ¡¡47 the rejection letter, I threw the unopened envelope into a drawer.

Five years later, I was moving to California. While ¡¡48 my apartment, I came across the unopened envelope. This time I opened it and read the editor¡¯s letter in ¡¡49 :

Ms Profit,

Your story on Salome Bey is fantastic. Yet we need some ¡¡50 materials. Please add those and return the article immediately. We would like to ¡¡51 your story soon.

Shocked, it took me a long time to ¡¡52 . Fear of rejection cost me ¸ß¿¼×ÊÔ´Íøly. I lost at least five hundred dollars and having my article appear in a major magazine. More importantly, I lost years of ¡¡53 writing. Today, I have become a full ¨C time writer. Looking back on this ¡¡54 , I learned a very important lesson: You can¡¯t ¡¡55 to doubt yourself.

Dash of Hope

¡°Dash¡± is a symbol which represents every day we¡¯ve spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your ¡°dash¡± is important.

Recently I ¡¡36 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn¡¯t help but feel it was not by ¡¡37 , nor happenstance, that she had been named ¡°Hope¡±. The strong feeling of sympathy and generosity ¡¡38 in her young heart made a lasting impression on me and countless others. ¡¡39 I never had the opportunity to meet her, I wish I had. It seems as though she was wise beyond her tender years and very, very special.

Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was ¡¡40 a ¡°wish¡± in early December 2010 by the ¡°Make-A-Wish¡± Foundation after being ¡¡41 that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 ¡¡42 in her area were waiting for their wishes to be granted (ʵÏÖ), she unselfishly used her wish to ¡¡43 that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked that it be done ¡¡44 January 16, 2011. Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her ¡¡45 request could not be granted as the funds (×ʽð) were simply ¡¡46 . They calculated that they would need to raise more than one ¡¡47 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish. ¡¡48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring ¡¡49 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually ¡¡50 as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations ¡¡51 the story of this caring young girl who had ¡¡52 the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were formed and schools, corporations

and various organizations assisted in ¡¡53 money to help make Hope¡¯s dream come true.

Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only ¡¡54 , but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, ¡°A Celebration of Hope¡± on January 16, 2011, the ¡¡55 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Her wish had been granted!

A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn¡¯t move. What was the ¡¡36 was he found himself unable to ask for help-his mobile phone went out of ¡¡37 as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but to

38 in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the 39 of the rescue.

¡¡ It is almost ¡¡40 that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his 41 : ¡°First of all I checked up my ¡¡42 conditions and found myself not in fatal danger. As there was no ¡¡43 to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from 44 . In this way I dozed (´òíï) off.¡±

His story put an end to my regret for the ¡¡45 of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men ¡¡46 to explore a mountain cave and got lost.

47 to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of ¡¡48 . Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the ¡¡49¡¡

people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the

50 of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to ¡¡51

themselves, they would probably sense a faint light glimmering (ÉÁ˸) not far away.

¡¡ Don¡¯t you think that you can compare it with ¡¡52 itself? When you meet with obstacles in life and work, you are lost in darkness. ¡¡53 you it¡¯s unclear yet and you needn¡¯t put up struggle ¡¡54 . It seems to be a negative attitude, ¡¡55 a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place.
