Most people think that the best store is one with very expensive goods. It’s certainly great if you have a pocket full of money and can buy something in one. How wonderful to be able to come home with an expensive computer, a latest(最新的) iPod or a designer dress! But have you ever heard of “dollar stores”? As the name suggests, in dollar stores everything costs a dollar or less. You find them in the US and many other Western countries. In dollar stores there are thousands of kinds of things and everything is affordable(买得起). If you go into a clothes shop, you find clothes. If you go into a car showroom, you see cars. But in a dollar store who knows what you will find? Visiting a dollar store is like going on a treasure hunt. There’ll be pots and pans for the kitchen, books, clothes, toys-----and a thousand other things you never dreamed of! There’s always a surprise in a dollar store.

Why are dollar stores so cheap? It’s because they’re full of stock(库存) that hasn’t sold in other stores: clothes that were last year’s fashion; books that won’t sell; inventions for the kitchen that didn’t catch on(流行). You may find you don’t want these, either. But, even if you don’t want to buy, they are great places to look around-----rather like museums. And remember, nothing costs more than a dollar!

Have you ever wished that you could brush your teeth while you’re moving? It turns out that scientists have the answer. There’s a special kind of edible toothpaste(牙膏)you can actually eat. You can use it to brush your teeth and eat it afterward. Without the need to spit(吐出), edible toothpaste is really convenient.

NASA invented edible toothpaste in the 1960s. They made it for astronauts in space and people called it “the astronaut toothpaste”. This is because spitting out toothpaste in space can be dangerous. Without gravity(重力)it can go everywhere and can damage spacecraft computers if it gets inside them. Edible toothpaste doesn’t foam(起泡沫)either so there is no mess.

If you don’t like the sound of edible toothpaste, there’s also a special toothbrush you can buy. When people travel to a place without water, they often use it. You just need to chew and it cleans your teeth just like you are using a normal brush. After you finish brushing your teeth, you spit it out and get rid of it. No mess and no worries.
