Terrafugia Company has said that its flying car, named Transition, has successfully finished a 37- second test flight

On March 5, 2009, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York.It was piloted by Phil Meteer, the company's chief pilot.

Transition is a two-seat airplane that can take off and land at airports as well as drive on roads.

The company said that the flying car can travel at speeds up to 115 mph for 450 miles in the air, drive at highway speeds on the ground, and fold up(折叠)to fit in a garage(车库)81 inches wide, and 80 inches high.

This could be used in hospitals to transport patients so as to avoid road traffic. It may start running on wheels, and when it gets to traffic lights it can fly overhead the lights and keeps its way forward. So it’s good news to avoid traffic problem and the traffic accidents.

But some people say this is a going airplane rather than a flying car, at least on the appearance.Anyway, we are happy for scientific-technical progress, what a fantastical world in the near future!

While most kids are playing iPad games or going out with friends, American boy Dean Miller is helping out at a fire department in Ohio.

Dean is 14 years old. He wants to help in every way he can. He goes out on calls with the fireman and helps clean the trucks, windows and floors.

“It feels really great because you know you were helping people to keep them safe,” said Dean.

Dean’s grandfather and great-grandfather were both firemen. His grandfather was once a fire chief(长官), so Dean was able to start helping early on. Dean knows what firemen do, so it is natural for him to become a volunteer. Dean is the youngest volunteer at the department. The older he becomes, the more responsibilities(责任) he has to take on.

The volunteer work also helped him a lot. He learned skills for the future. Dean wants to be a fireman someday.

“I feel that volunteering is important. If you volunteer for something, you know what you’re doing when you get a job there, and you don’t need as much training,” Dean said.

Because the fire team cannot be everywhere at once, the volunteers must play important roles(作用). They need to stay at certain places to call the fire team if there is a fire. He also talked about how much he had learned from volunteering at the fire department. “I’m learning that it takes courage(勇气), and it takes a team to help people,” he said.

44. Dean dreams of being ______ in the future.

  A. a volunteer B. a fireman C. a truck driver D. a chief

45. Dean learned _____ by working as a volunteer.

  A. how to get a good job B. some new iPad games

  C. some skills for the future D. how to drive the fire truck

46. The writer wants to encourage people to _____.

  A. do some volunteer work B. be a fireman someday

  C. call the fire team at certain places D. visit the fire department in Ohio

47. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. Dean enjoys playing iPad like other kids

B. Dean wants to be like his grandfather

  C. Dean makes much money as a fireman

D. Dean will take on fewer responsibilities at 15.
