No one knows how man learned to make words. Perhaps he began by making sounds like those made by animals. Perhaps he grunted like a pig when he lifted something heavy. Perhaps he made sounds like those he heard all round him—water splashing, bees humming, a stone falling to the ground. Somehow he learned to make words. As the centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. Each contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not need all these. Only a few thousand words are used in everyday life. The words you know are called your vocabulary. You should try to make your vocabulary larger. Read as many books as you can. There are plenty of books written in easy language. Your dictionary is your most useful book.

仔细阅读下列短文, 根据题目, 选出最佳选项. This is a story told by a student of veterinary medicine(兽医) who is working in the countryside with the local vet. During the first week I was with Dr. Johnson, nothing special happened. However, when I got to the MacPherson farm, I saw something extraordinary(特别的). While I was talking to Farmer MacPherson, a pig came round the corner of the barn(谷仓). What was extraordinary was that the pig had three man-made legs. I asked the farmer about it and this is what he told me. "You mean Pinky Well, let me tell you a few things about him. One day I was working in the hay field. The tractor started to roll and trapped me under the wheel(车轮). Pinky saw this and ran back to fetch my wife. That pig is very clever梑etter than any dog. " I had heard that pigs were clever, but the story didn't explain the three man-made legs. "Let me tell you about another time," MacPherson said. "My son was swimming in the river over there and he hit his head on a branch. He was going down for the third time when Pinky jumped into the water and pulled him out. " It was hard to believe that, but what about the man-made legs "Well," said MacPherson "last year the old farmhouse burned down. We were sleeping when the fire started. Pinky ran around the house squalling until we woke up". We were just outside the house when the roof(屋顶)fell in. "That's a very special pig," I said.
