Do you like traveling? How can you make your trip interesting? Here’s some advice.
Read!
Before you leave, you should find some information about the place, such as its geography, history and people. You can introduce that place better by reading.
Take photos!
If you want to take some photos, remember to choose the most special sights. Don’t choose the sight you can see in other places. For example, Qingdao and Ningbo are coastal cities, so don’t only take photos of the sea. You should take photos of something else, too.
Taste!
You’d better taste some specials(特产) in the area. Food in some places is very delicious. So why not taste it? Maybe you have just one chance to taste it in your life.
Write!
When you visit a place, you should take a pen and a notebook, so you can write down what you see and what you think during the trip.

There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person.
Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you — will you make any next year?

Liu Hui, 16
I’m going to teach children who have difficulties in reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading for Life. Every day, I’m going to help children choose and read books that they like. I love children and reading, and I want to be a teacher. So this is going to be a great experience for me.

Do you believe that there might be life on other planets? Would you like to be the first “Earthling” to get in touch with an alien? Well, you can start your search from home. All you need is a computer and the Internet, and you can join the project of the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA).
NASA started the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project eight years ago. Its goal is to examine the radio signals (信号) from nearby stars. Researchers believe that a large number of stars in the universe could have planets orbiting (circling) around them. And they want to know if these planets have conditions suitable for life forms.
How does the project work? There is a huge radio telescope with a large bowl-shaped dish at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. It catches radio signals which are then fed in to SETI computers. The researchers have to study thousands of radio signals daily. They are looking for signals whose patterns (模式)would show the existence(存在)of hydrogen or water molecules that are necessary for life on Earth. They could be at it for years before showing a single positive result!
Of course, even the researchers know that they cannot do a fast job on their own. So they want as many helpers as possible. Even you ! To join search, just download SETI’s free software (SETI @home). What happens next is fun. While you are away from your computer, the SETI program in your computer downloads the information on radio signals received by the radio telescope. It studies the information and send the result back to the research center.
There are other benefits too of having the SETI project software in your computer. When you leave your computer unattended, instead of seeing the usual screen saver, you can feast your eyes on an amazing 3-D chart on the screen. This shows that your computer is busy studying SETI data and searching for signs of alien life!
More than 1824500 people around the world are currently in the program and more are joining in every day. It’s slim chance, but wouldn’t it be fantastic if your computer were to be the first to discover an alien signal!
53. Why do researchers examine the radio signals from nearby stars?
A. They plan to help people who live on the stars.
B. They need to make sure that the stars have planets.
C. They have to keep in touch with the aliens on the stars.
D. They wonder if the stars’ planets are suitable for life forms.
54. What does a helper’s computer do in the research?
A. It finds the radio signals. B. It looks for other planets.
C. It shows a positive result. D. It studies the information.
55. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To prove the value of a research. B. To invite people to join a project.
C. To suggest the existence of aliens. D. To advise people to study planets.
查看习题详情和答案>>If you plan to take your pet on a trip, prepare ahead of time. At least two weeks before you leave, take your pet to a vet. See if he or she is tit for travel and ask if he or she should have any medicine before leaving. The vet may suggest certain pills for sickness or for calming the pet.
Some states or foreign countries have health laws that say animals must have certain injections(注射)before they can be allowed to enter. Your vet may have this information. You can also get help on the United States and Canadian laws from a book published by the Department of Agriculture which some libraries have. For information on foreign countries, check with their consulates (领事馆).You can also ask the airlines on which you are travelling.
Find out if the places where you plan to stay allow pets because many do not.
If you are going by plane or train, ask if pets are allowed. If they are,ask where they will be kept and who will care for them. The big bus lines in this country do not allow pets.
Choose your pet’s box carefully. Plastic boxes are better than cardboard or wooden ones because they can' be chewed(嚼碎).
If going by plane or train during warm weather, try to go in the cooler early morning or evening hours. Also try to avoid (避免)very cold winter weather because pets often suffer from cold. Even in your own car, be careful. Do not leave the animal inside with the windows closed because the car may become too hot or too cold.
