On the first day of the new term in 2012, thousands of students in Chongming County in Shanghai rode the new school buses to school. The buses are yellow with huge bonnets(发动机罩盖) in the front. Students call them “big nose” school buses.
The local government spent 6 million yuan buying 17 new school buses for the primary and middle schools in the county to make sure the safety of more than 1,000 students who live in rural areas. Ordinary buses couldn’t arrive there easily.
This kind of school bus has alarms, on-board cameras and seats specially chosen for schoolchildren. In the old school buses, there was no air conditioner and every two or three children shared one seat. “ The new buses are sturdy enough so that parents shouldn’t be worried about their children,” said Zhang Zhongli, a father of a student, adding that every child only pays 300 yuan each month, almost the same as before. And drivers of the new school buses must have at least three years of driving experience and a 100,000- kilometer safe driving record.
