As a young child, I was quiet and shy. I was also sick for a long time. My parents worked, and I spent a lot of time at my grandparent’s home. While my grandmother cleaned the house and cooked, my grandfather played with me.
I was six when my grandfather died. A few months before he died, he gave me a beautiful blue and white blanket (毯子). I loved the blanket very much because it made me think of my grandfather. But after a few years, the blanket didn’t look very good. It had holes and was dirty. I didn’t want to throw the blanket away, so my mother made the blanket into a book bag. I was proud of the book bag, and I used it to carry my books to school every day for a few years. Then the book bag was broken. I begged my mother to make something out of it. She made it into a pencil-box. After a few months, the pencil-box was broken, too. By then I could sew (缝), and I made the pencil-box into a small wallet.
I used it for three years, but one day I lost it. I felt sad. My friends and family said, “Forget about it, Paul. You can’t make something out of nothing.”
I thought about it for a while. I decided my friends and family were wrong. There was a way to make something out of nothing. I wrote down the story of my grandfather’s blanket.

Even at school there had been an unhealthy competition between George and Richard.

"I’II be the first millionaire in Coleford!" Richard used to say.

"And you’ll be sorry you know me," George would reply "because I’II be the best lawyer in the town!"

George never did become a lawyer and Richard never made any money, Instead both men      opened bookshops on opposite sides of Coleford High Street. It was hard to make money from books, which made the competition between them worse.

Then Richard married a mysterious (神秘的) girl. The husband and wife spent their honeymoon on the coast - but Richard never came back. The police found his wallet on a beach but the body was never found. He must have died.

Now with only one bookshop in town, business was better for George. But sometimes he sat in his small, old kitchen and looked out of the dirty window, thinking about his formal rival (以前的竞争对手) . Perhaps he missed him?

George was very interested in old dictionaries. He’d recently found a collector in Australia who was selling a rare first edition(版本). When the book arrived, it was in perfect condition and George was delighted. But while he was having lunch, George looked at the photo in the newspaper that the book had been wrapped(包裹) in. He was surprised - the smiling face was older than he remembered but unmistakable! Shaking, George started reading.

"Bookends have bought ten bookstores from their rivals Dylans. The company, owned by

multi-millionaire Richard Pike, is now the largest bookseller in Australia. "

1 How did George feel about Richard after his disappearance?

   A. He envied Richard’s marriage.               B. He felt lucky with no rival in town.

   C. He thought of Richard from time to time.       D. He was sorry for Richard’s death.

2 George got information about Richard from          .

   A. a dictionary collector in Australia             B. the wrapping paper of a book

   C. a rare first edition of a dictionary             D. the Richard’s rivals Dylans

3 What happened to George and Richard in the end?

   A. Both of them became millionaires.

   B. Both of them realized their early dreams.

   C. George had a large business while Richard was missing.

   D. Richard became a millionaire while George had no great achievements.
