The Lost Watch

A rich American went into a shop in London. He wanted very much to buy a nice-looking watch, but the owner of the shop asked five hundred dollors for it. Suddenly a young man came into the shop, took the watch out of the owner's hands and ran out with it. It all happened in a few seconds. When the owner ran out into the street, the young man was already lost among the people.

The American went on. At the next corner, he saw the young man with the stolen watch in his hand. “Do you want to buy a fine watch, sir? It's five times cheaper.” “The young man doesn't know I saw him stealing the watch,” he thought. The American paid at once and went back to his room with the watch. He told his friend about the fine watch.

His friend took a look at the watch and started laughing. He said, “You are a fool. This watch isn't worth even ten dollars. I'm sure the shop owner and the young man planned the accident together. ”

In the United States, boys and girls start school when they are five years old. In some states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen or eighteen years old when they graduate from secondary school. Another name for secondary school is high school.

Most children go to public elementary schools (公立小学) and secondary schools. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay directly for their children's education because tax money supports the public schools. If a child attends a private school (私立学校), his parents pay the school for the child's education.

Today about half of the high school students go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive tax money from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay very much if his parents live in that state. Private colleges and universities are expensive, however. Almost half of the college students in the United States work while they are studying. When a student's family is not rich, he has to make money for part of his college expenses.
