Mr. and Mrs. Stokes were sitting in the garden of their London home when I arrived to interview them and their fourteen-year-old son Carl. But Carl was working upstairs. “He doesn't often leave his room,” his mother explained.
At the moment Carl is working on a programme for a new computer game. Computers have become his whole life. In the last year Carl has earned over ￡25000 from writing programmes. “When did he buy the computer?” I wondered. “We bought it for him eighteen months ago for his birthday,”said Mr. Stokes. “We didn't know what we were doing. Our son has changed. Eighteen months ago he didn't see a computer. Now he doesn't talk about anything else. And we don't understand a thing about computers.” “And do you think it's good for him?” was my question. “No, we don't. We worry about him,” said Mrs. Stokes. “He doesn't have any other interests now. And he hasn't done any work for school exams.” Carl's parents don't understand computers, but Carl certainly does. “I love computers,” he said, “I soon got tired of playing games though.
