Fires kill thousands of people every year. Learn what to do in case a fire breaks out. Here are some rules to follow at home.

The first thing to do is to make an escape (逃脱) plan. In a fire, smoke and flames (火焰) may block stairs or a hallway. Plan a way to get out of each room in your home. You may have to climb out through a window. At night, sleep with the door closed.

Don't try to fight a fire yourself. Get away from the fire and call the fire department. Test a door with your hands before you open it. Don't open a door that is warm. Use another way out.

Many fires start in a kitchen. A pan of grease (油) may catch fire. Put a lid (盖) on the pan and turn off the stove. Never use water on a grease fire because water will spread the fire.
