Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places. If you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia and some friends ask you to eat with them, what kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp”(打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping will show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are supposed to say, “Excuse me, please.”In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts on Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show their good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat. What are good manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you’re polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you. If you meet a friend in Arabia, you should walk behind the tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.

　　Different countries and different people have different manners．We must find out their customs so that they will not think us impolite．Here are examples of the things that a person with good education does or does not do．

　　If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first．When the door opens, you will not move before the host says“Come in, please．”After you enter the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat．When a cup of tea is put on a tea table before you or sent to your hand, you will say“Thank you”and receive it with two hands, not one hand, or they will think you have ill manners．Before entering a house in Japan, it is a good manner to take off your shoes．In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done．In a Malay(马来人的)house, a visitor never finishes the food on the table．He leaves a little to show that he has had enough．In England, a visitor always finished a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it．This will make the host pleased．

　　There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth．Choose ideas from the list or come up with a few of your own．

　　#Plant flowers, grass or trees．

　　#Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you bring there and keep litter in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin(垃圾箱)．

　　#Turn off the lights, TV sets when you leave the room．This saves a lot of electricity．

　　#Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth．You can save some water by not letting it run．Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup because this saves paper．

　　#Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep warm air in．

　　#Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away．

　　#Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away．

　　#Use both sides of paper．

　　#Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or lakes nearby．

　　#Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth．You don't have to wait until Earth Day to do these things．Make every day Earth Day．

　　If everyone makes a contribution to protecting the environment, the world will become more and more beautiful．
