Coal miner(矿工) work under the earth to collect coal(煤炭). They have dangerous jobs because occasionally the earth sinks or falls apart. When this happens, miners are trapped underground. They are buried. If they don’t have air to breathe, food to eat, and water to drink, they will die. They can’t go without any of these things for long, but the first is the most important. It is difficult to figure out(计算出,推断) where miners are and reach them. Trapped miners dream of being saved and don’t give up.

In July 2002, nine miners went to work in Pennsylvania. All of a sudden, there was a terrible accident. A wall broke apart and water flooded the area where the miners were working. It came up to their collars(衣领). At first, the miners shouted, but no one could hear them. Luckily, people on the surface figured out where the miners were and dug a breathing hole. Later, they gave them messages from their families. Many people took part in helping to save them. After a period of several days, they brought the trapped miners to the surface alive.

Basketball is a young game though it is over a hundred years old.  In the year of 1891, a certain
college was having some trouble with its boy students. The weather was bad. They had to stay indoors.
As they could not take part in their usual outdoor sports, they were unhappy, and some of them even
got into fights from time to time.  Finally, one of the teachers at the college asked Dr. Naismith to invent
a game so that the students might have something to play. It was not easy to invent a game because it had
to be played indoors, and the court was not very large.  Dr. Naismith thought for a few days and invented a kind of ball game. It was a fast, exciting game with much moving and passing of the ball. Usually two teams played the game.,  In order to make a score, the ball had to be thrown into a basket ten feet above the floor on the wall. At each end of the court there was such a basket. At first, Dr. Naismith had planned to
have the ball thrown into a box. As he could not find boxes of the right size, he had to use fruit baskets.
Dr. Naismith put two fruit baskets on the walls of both sides. There were nine plavers on each side. The
players tried to throw the ball into the baskets.  There were no holes at the bottom of the baskets.  When
a ball went into the basket, it stayed there.  The game had to stop.  A player had to climb up to get the
ball out. Later people used net baskets. Now only ten members play the game. There are five players on
each side. Basketball today is played in many countries.

It all started a year before when my daughter Suzanne and I were shopping in Sydney. In the window of a sports shop I noticed a photo of a group of young people climbing the rock along a canyon. “That’s what I’m going to do next year,” I said. Suzanne laughed. “Sure, Mum! Don’t forget you’re 65 years old.”

I didn’t feel I was that age! I joined a club and trained weekly. Each day I felt my physical energy increase and, along with it, my confidence. Then Suzanne pointed out, “It’s good, but how can you clear away the fear of height?” “I’ve got it worked out.” I replied bravely. “We’re going to the indoor climbing center.”

While I was going up the high wall, I was afraid to look down as if a terrible animal was after me. Some time later, as I reached the ground, I sat down heavily on the floor. Later that night, as I lay in bed, I encouraged myself, “You’d climbed the wall! You’ll certainly make it!”

We set off with our packages to the Grand Canyon. When we reached it, I found the canyon was a huge black hole—far deeper than I had imagined. As the guide clipped(夹住) me onto the rope, my heart beat double-time and I wondered why I had got myself into this. Time lost all meaning as I pushed my body forward. Only the strong rope kept me from losing hope. I began to think it would never end when everyone had stopped. “This is as far as we go, and we can climb out after a few steps, “the guide said finally. Two and a half hours later, we returned to the car park at last. I began to shake, one hard step after another.

Getting onto the bus, I fell into the seat I had left so confidently a lifetime before. Then, while I was in the seat catching my breath, a feeling of happiness spread through me. I had done it, at 66 years of age.
