Have you ever heard about Chaplin? He was one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of the cinemas. During his lifetime, Chaplin acted in 13 films, and wrote, directed (导演) and acted in 69 other films.
Chaplin was born in England in 1889. He began to act by chance when he was five years old. Chaplin’s mother was a singer. One day she lost her voice during the performance and had to leave the stage. The five-year old Chaplin went on and sang a famous song. In fact he sang so well that all the audience threw money onto the stage. Chaplin stopped singing and told the audience he would pick up the money first and then finish the song. The audience laughed. At the age of eight, Chaplin joined a group of child dancers.
In 1912 Chaplin went to the USA for a second time and got his first film part there. In his film, Chaplin wore a small black hat, very wide trousers, a moustache (胡子) and carried a stick that he swung in the air as he walked. As soon as the part that Chaplin appeared in the film, the audience couldn’t help laughing. Of all his films, City Lights, Modern Times and The Gold Rush are the most well-known.
Chaplin lived the last years of his life in Switzerland (瑞士), where he was buried in 1977.
