Many centuries ago, there lived in Scotland a king whose name was Robert Bruce. He was both a smart king and a brave soldier. One day the English army invaded(侵略)Scotland and Bruce led his people against their enemy.Bruce fought with the enemy for six times, but the six times he was beaten. So he was forced to go into hiding in the woods or in lonely places in the mountains.

On rainy day, Bruce lay on the ground in a hut(茅舍), listening to the sound of the rain on the roof.He was tired and sad.At that time he was going to give up all his hope.It seemed to him that it was no use trying to do anything any more.As he lay thinking, suddenly he found a spider over his head trying to spin a web.He watched her with great interest and care.

Six times she tried to reach the opposite of the wall to fix her thread and six times he failed.

But the spider didn't lose hope. With still more care, she tried for the seventh time.

Bruce lost himself in watching her swing herself out upon the slender line and he almost forgot his own troubles. He found the thread was carried safely from one to the other.Suddenly, he had an idea and he would try a seventh time.He told his men of his plans and sent them out with messages of cheer to his disheartened people.Soon there was an army of brave Scotsmen gathered around him. This time the Scots won and their enemy was driven out of Scotland.
