I’ve played the doctor Margaret Brent in an off-Broadway play for almost 25 years. Friends ask me, “How do you do that every night? Doesn’t it get boring?” “ 36 ,” I tell them.
There are always unexpected events that 37 the performance, and there are things I do myself to make each performance a little 38 . I believe that anyone with a 39 job can do things to make it more 40 . Traffic cops who dance while 41 traffic are one example, and subway workers who
42 entertaining announcements are another.
I’ve heard of employers coming up with ideas to keep employees from 43 in certain jobs, but for me, the 44 does that. Near the end of the play, I tell the detective who is trying to arrest me that I love him. Sometimes the audience laughs, sometimes someone 45 “Oh, my God” and sometimes the audience is silent, 46 to hear what the detective will say next. Each 47 changes the energy in the room and our performances. 48 the night, the audience, and the particular actor playing the detective, there are hundreds of ways to say “I love you,” and I have 49 them all.
I’m sure people with repetitive jobs will tell you that they grow with the work 50 they’ve done it for a long time. I 51 challenging myself to bring something new to the role every single time I play it. It’s very satisfying to know I can do the job well 52 . These types of jobs 53 you to use different parts of your brain.
I love the idea that every night at 8 p.m. I will be 54 doing what I love. My job 55 me up and makes me happy.
