M:Well, it depends. If you come for a private instructor like me, it’s probably going to be a bit less expensive than going to a big school. The thing is, people have usually heard of the big school and trust them.Well, I get customers through personal connections.
W:Does that mean you have to try harder to get customers??
M:Not now, when I started I have to.But at the moment I am fully booked and my prices are quite competitive.
W:Learning to drive is usually a nervous experience for beginners. What do you think?
M:Well, it can be.But I try to get them to sit quietly in the drive’s seat for a few moments. With their eyes closed, you will be surprised how it changed some people. They fell much more ready for driving if they had a few quiet moments.

He also started “24 club”, where you would sit in a circle and drink twenty four tall bottles of beer, one after another, until they were gone. I knew there was no future in any of it and that eventually he would self?destruct if he continued using this drug. However, he had been my best friend since grade school, and I didn't have a lot of other close friends. I didn't want to be a loner, but I also didn't want to end up where I thought Jack was going.
I remember finally deciding sadly that it was just too risky to hang out with him any more. And so during my senior year I had to start over making friends. At first I felt awkward, didn't fit in, and felt dumb being alone. But after a few months I made friends with guys who had similar values and also a lot of fun.
My old friend Jack turned into a druggie (瘾君子), barely graduated, and eventually drowned in a swimming pool while intoxicated (喝醉的). It was sad, but I was grateful I had the courage to stick with the_right_decision and long?term thinking at a key time in my life.
If you're having trouble making good friends, remember that your friends don't always have to be your age. I once spoke to a guy who seemed to have a grandpa who listened to him and was a great friend. This seemed to fill the friendship blank he had in his life. All in all, just be wise when choosing friends, because much of your future relies on who you hang out with.

Mike Maietta was eating lunch when he got a text message from his mom.
“Notre Dame,” it said. “Big envelope!”
Mike, a senior at a Californian high school, shouted with joy. The big envelope meant that the excellent university in Indiana had offered him a place in its Class of 2013. But the $51,300 annual fee is a big trouble. So Mike and his parents are considering offers from several other colleges and are figuring out the costs of tuition, housing and holiday trips home.
This year, money is the driving factor(因素) for a growing number of high school seniors, who have to decide what colleges to attend this fall. Less jobs and house prices have changed family spending.
“We’re excited that Mike got into eight great schools,” said Mike’s father, an engineer at Microsoft. “But if you consider going to school out of state, you’ve got to think about all of the other costs: moving, flying back and forth for the holidays. You’re looking at about $3,000 a year, just for travel.”
As families weigh their choices, some are going back to financial aid offices hoping help packages can be increased.
Rachel Brown was happy to get a thick envelope from New York University (NYU). Although she has always wanted to live in Manhattan, she is seriously considering the University of California San Diego (UCSD), because of the high cost in New York.
“The tuition for NYU is twice as much as UCSD,” said Rachel, 17. “My mom doesn’t want me to have a big debt when I graduate, and I don’t want that either. I’d have to take out a loan of $15,000. I’ll check and see if there’s any way that NYU can offer me any financial aid.”
More than 7.6 million American students have filled out the Free Application for Students Aid, 19.9 percent increase over last year.
This month the Federal Department of Education urged college financial aid officers to give more help to certain families. A record 30,428 students applied for 2,300 places at Stanford, partly because the university increased financial aid for families earning below $10,000.

| C.It is inevitably hard for college students to borrow money to cover costs. |
| D.An interest-free loan for students helps more students apply for Stanford. |
| A.the calculation of different costs including tuition |
| B.the extremely hard financial situation in America |
| C.the excitement of students’ being able to enter ideal colleges |
| D.the financial crisis of families over college entrance |
Starry Night
Have you ever seen a real night sky that looks like Van Gogh’s Starry Night? I hope not! So, why would an artist paint the sky this way? Perhaps I can answer that with another question. When you’re happy, why do you sing instead of speaking? Or when you’re in love, why do you speak of roses and honey? When we do these things, we, too are artists. We’re using something that goes beyond a mere scientific description in order to communicate our feelings more powerfully than straightforward words can. So consider for a moment that Van Gogh might not have been hallucinating (产生幻觉的) on the night he painted this. Maybe he felt something so powerful that he had to go beyond the familiar to express it.
I hope I’m reminding you of something you already know as I describe the experience of being outside at night under a crystal clear sky that makes everything seem clean and refreshing. So you look up. And suddenly you see the sky that you’ve seldom seen before. It’s not just the same old dark night sky tonight. Instead, the blackness is a deep, rich blue that is more bottomless than any ocean. The stars are not spots of light but brilliant, magical diamonds that dance like tiny angels. In just this special moment, the sky is somehow alive, and it seems to speak to you silently about the meaning of infinity (无限).
Now look at the painting again. Can you see something of what makes this such a famous and well-loved image? But there’s more here than that. Van Gogh painted this while he was quite struck down by a mental disease. It is natural to imagine that he frequently battled the fear that he would never escape his prison to true freedom. It is natural for us to imagine this because each of us has faced our own personal prison, whether it be disease, the loss of a loved one, serious financial problems … In such moments it is tempting to give up to despair (绝望) and collapse in hopelessness.
Looking at this painting, I imagine Van Gogh in just such a moment of despair, when he is struck by the memory of one of those amazing night skies. He recalls the sense that he is not alone, that there is a living, infinite world with rich colorful creatures and scenes all around.
And so th
e sky flows across the canvas (画布) full of vitality (活力) and power. The stars don’t just sparkle; they explode. Looking closer, we notice that the earth itself seems to respond to the movement in the sky, forming its own living waves in the mountain and rolling trees. In the sleepy village, the windows of the houses glow (发光) with the same light that brightens the universe. The giant trees at the left seem to capture the joy by stretching upwards toward the sky.
What a tremendous message of hope there is in this masterpiece! Even if our troubles persist, the world around us assures us that life is worth living. That’s what the angels sing about. Doesn’t it make you want to sing, too?
【小题1】Looking at the painting Starry Night, we can see all the following except________.
| A.The singing angels | B.the giant trees |
| C.the sleepy village | D.the sparkling stars |
| A.happiness | B.vitality | C.power | D.despair |
| A.trouble in one’s life | B.mental illness |
| C.control from the authority | D.a place where criminals are kept |
| A.To explain how Van Gogh painted the Starry Night. |
| B.To tell us how to appreciate the Starry Night. |
| C.To prove Van Gogh was in a hallucinating state of mind while painting the picture. |
| D.To show us the beauty of the sky on a starry night. |
