On a good night when there is no Moon and the air is clear, only up to 4,000 or so stars can be seen by the unaided eye. From ancient times star-watchers have tried to bring some order into the sky by fitting the stars into patterns, the constellations(星座),to which names were given.

Observation of the night sky every few hours shows that in the northern hemisphere(半球)the stars appear to turn anticlockwise(逆时针方向)about a point near the Pole Star.As they turn, the stars keep the same positions in relation to each other, and in fact the appearance of the constellations has changed very little over the centuries.Like the Sun and Moon, the stars have a daily journey across the sky, rising upwards in the east and setting in the west-due to the Earth’s daily spin. The Circumpolar(围绕天极的)Stars, those near the Pole Star, are an exception to this; they are so close to the pole that they never disappear below the horizon.

Although the stars always rise in the same places they do not do so at the same times every day. They rise about 4 minutes earlier each day since the Earth is progressing in its orbit around the Sun; in almost but not exactly a year they again rise and set at the same time.If a certain star is seen to rise in the east exactly when the Sun sets on a particular day, a few weeks later it will be seen well above the eastern horizon at sunset.

阅读理解: 阅读下列短文, 从所给的四个选项中, 选出最佳答案。

Think for a moment about the teachers you have had at school or at university. Which one did you like best? And why? Were the teachers you liked best also the ones who were the best teachers, in your opinion? Before you read any further, consider for a moment the qualities that make a teacher outstanding. (杰出的;出类拔萃)

Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have an expert (专家的) knowledge of their subjects, and that they should devote themselves completely to their work. All of these ideas are, of course, true to a certain extent (程度) but they are perhaps a little too simple.

It is impossible for anyone to love everyone they know, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people and in the development of both their brains and their characters. A deep knowledge of the subject is especially important, but equally (同样的) important is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively—a teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to explain ideas in a clear way, how to help students to use the knowledge they are given, how to control a class and so on. Finally, teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy to their work, of course. However, they are also models that their students must follow; so it is important that they should be well-balanced people with interests outside their school work— family, friends, hobbies, and so on. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to become too narrow-minded.

(1)The writer suggests that you think about the teachers who have taught you at school in order that __________.

[ ]

A. you may love them better than before

B. you'll get something you can write about them

C. you might know the qualities that a good teacher should have

D. you might get something for which you will praise them

(2)It is impossible for every teacher ________ according to the article.

[ ]

A. to have a good knowledge of the subject he teaches

B. to have ways to pass the knowledge of his subjects on to his students effectively

C. to be a good example for his students to follow

D. to love all the students he has taught or is teaching

(3)In the sentence "teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people…" "they" and "them" refer to ___________.

[ ]

A. teachers and teachers B. students and students

C. teachers and students D. students and teachers

(4)The skills of teaching include __________.

[ ]

A. how to explain ideas in a clear way

B. how to devote a lot more time to their work

C. how to control a class

D. A and C

(5)A teacher who ___________ is likely to be too narrow-minded.

[ ]

A. are well-balanced people with a lot of interests

B. are interested not only in class but also in outside their school work

C. only lives for his work
