Bicycles are a great way to get around. They’re fun to ride, especially down hills. And, as you speed along the road, you might also think of ways in which you could improve your bike— make it safer, more efficient, or more comfortable. In fact, the two-wheeled machines make for some cool science projects.

This year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held last May in Cleveland, featured(had)three bicycle projects from three countries. Like many of the other experiments presented at ISEF, the bike projects showed that some of the most interesting scientific research often begins by taking a closer look at things you care about.

Renato Angulo Chu had even grander ambitions. The 12th-grader from Lima, Peru, wanted to address some of his country's economic troubles.

"I see a problem in my country," Renato said. "If you go to the forests in Peru, in some places you cannot find electricity. If you go with my bicycle, you can turn on the lights."

Renato, 16, spent 3 years designing his special Multibike. The device looks like a fixed exercise bike. It has wires fixed along the frame and a blender strapped (fastened) to the back. Turning the pedals operates the blender. The same principle can be used to sharpen knives or sweep city streets.

The Multibike can work either as a fixed bike or as a bicycle able to travel city streets and country roads. It's made from inexpensive materials, and the user gets exercise while pedaling to operate a machine.

"You pedal the bike, and you can mix any drink you want," Renato said. More importantly, he added, the same concept could be used to bring light to houses in remote regions of the rainforest.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Bikes should be made more comfortable to ride.

B.You can improve your bicycle for science research.

C.Many inventions are connected with the bicycle.

D.Bicycles are the best way to go about

2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.ISEF is an exhibiton displaying bicycle experiments designed by students.

B.Looking closely at things you are concerned about can lead to scientific research.

C.Renato’s improvement of the bicycle has solved the country’s great problem.

D.Renato’s special bicycle will soon be put into use in remote areas.’

3.The underlined word “address” in the third paragraph probably has the same meaning as _______.

A.make address written

B.give up

C.work at

D.speak at

4.Renato’s special Multibike has all the following  EXCEPT  ________.

A.making knives sharp

B.mixing any kind of drinks

C.producing electricity

D.operating a machine with its own electricity

5.It can be inferred that Renato’s special bicycle is mainly designed for ________.

A.distant areas in the rainforest without electricity.

B.the use of his own family to make life easier.

C.the competition of ISEF to win money to support remote rainforests

D.enough exercise by pedaling it

A child-like robot. Wakamaru, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan and combining the roles
of nurse, companion and security guard, will soon be in the market to look after the growing number of old
people with no one to look after them.
Cameras fixed under the "eyebrows" of the robot enable it to "see" as it moves around in a house. The
images can be sent to the latest mobile phones, which can show the pictures. Wakamaru speaks with either
the voice of a boy or a girl. It is also designed to provide companionship, saying hello to its "papa" when he
comes home. Based on a vocabulary of around 10,000 words, it is the first household robot which is able to
hold simple conversations. It can not only speak, but also understand answers and react accordingly. It will
ask "Are you all right?" if its owner doesn't move for some time. If the answer is no, or there is no answer, it
will telephone preset numbers, send images and work as a speakerphone. It can recognize up to 10 faces and
be set to tell forgetful people when it is time to take medicine, eat and sleep.
However, like most robots, it cannot climb stairs. Mitsubishi developed Wakamaru from robots which have
already been made to go around nuclear power facilities."Looking at the ageing of society and the falling birth
rate we decided that this could work as a business. We want to offer it as a product that helps society,"said the
project chief. The developers plan to sell the robot from April this year at between5,000 and 6,000 pounds.
The life expectancy (寿命) of Japanese women has shot up to almost 85, the highest in the world. At the
same time, large families are being replaced by nuclear families. This has left many Japanese anxious about
their elderly parents. Therefore, the technology has gained nation-wide publicity in Japan.
1. The passage is written with the purpose to _____.
A. introduce a new robot
B. solve the ageing problem
C. tell people the rapid development of technology
D. tell people how to use the robot
2. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. the robot can dial proper number for help
B. the robot is likely to have a promising market
C. the robot enables the Japanese to live longer
D. many elderly Japanese are anxious about their future
3. The underlined part "nuclear families"in the last paragraph probably means "_____ ".
A. families with nuclear power facilities
B. small families without a parent
C. families with children and old people
D. families with parents and their children only
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Latest Development of Robot
B. Japanese Robot and the Ageing Society
C. Large Market of the New Robot
D. Japan-made Robot Helps the Old

For £12 you can equip an entire classroom in Burkina Faso, for £31 you can equip a school football team in Sierra Leone and for £68 you can support the whole education of a Haitian schoolgirl.
The educational presents are the latest way on the trend of charitable(慈善的)giving for Christmas. Plan UK, an international children's charity, has made its gift list focusing on helping the world's poorest countries to improve their education conditions.
"Every year we rack our brains for the perfect present and too often end up with yet another pair of socks or a useless ornament," said Marie Staunton, Plan UK's chief executive.
"This year we are offering people in the UK the chance to give twice. Buying an alternative gift for a loved one could likely save the life of some of the world's poorest children."
Plan UK is working on projects in specific countries, such as Burkina Faso, which is one of the poorest countries in the world and has a primary school enrolment rate(入学率)of just 36%. A present of £12 will help equip a classroom in Burkina Faso with chairs, desks, books and pencils.
The educational presents are the latest addition to a list of other charitable presents, including vaccinations(接种)and clean water systems.
Football strips for schoolchildren in Sierra Leone are designed to help the children have fun while continuing with the psychological healing process following the country's civil war. The £31 gift will supply the team strip, a football and a whistle to a school in Sierra Leone.
Oxfam offers similar gifts. Its Back to School kits for five pupils is a bestseller in a catalogue(目录)which includes the £24 Christmas goat, the £30 lavatory and £12 for school dinners for up to 200 children.
