She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. Noy way could I have 36 . Maybe someone had kicked her 37 their car the night before. “No 38 for her any more with the baby coming.”“We never really wanted her,but what could we have done? She was a 39 .” People find all sorts of excuses for 40 an animal.
I called her Goldie. If I had 41 what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those 42 few days. She hardly ate anyting and had such an air of 43 about her. There was 44 I could do to make her happy,it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her 45 owner’s. But 46 at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side.
47 we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.
That’s why it was such a 48 when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were walking a long way from home, when she started 49 and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn’t hold her any longer and she 50 down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.
By the time I 51 the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking(舔)the four puppies(幼犬)I started to feel 52 towards them. The woman at the door said,“I took her for a walk one day, 53 the puppies were born, and she just disappeared.”“She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,” 54 a boy from behind her.
I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I’ve got Nugget now,and she looks just like her 55 . And I’ve learnt a good lesson:not to judge people.

The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautiful sunset over the ocean, so that the audiences could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other for ever. He sent camera crew out one evening to film the sunset for him.
The next morning he said to the men, "Have you provided me with that sunset? "
"No, Sir," the men answered.
The director was angry. "Why not? " he asked.
"Well, Sir, " one of the men answered, "we are on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset."
"But I want a sunset!" the director shouted. "Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one. "
But then a young secretary had an idea. "Why don't you photograph a sunrise, " she suggested, "and then play it backwards? Then it'll look like a sunset."
"That's a very good idea! " the director said. Then he turned to the camera crew and said, "Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea. "
The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay(海湾). Then at nine o'clock they took it to the director. "Here it is, Sir, " they said, and give it to him. He was very pleased.
They all went into the studio(摄影棚). "All right, " the director explained, "now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the 'sunset' behind them. "
The "sunset" began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop.

查看习题详情和答案>>It's no secret that many children would be healthier and happier with adoptive parents than with the parents that nature dealt them. That's especially true of children who remain in abusive homes because the law blindly favors biological parents. It's also true of children who suffer for years in foster homes (收养孩子的家庭) because of parents who can't or won't care for them but refuse to give up custody (监护) rights.
Fourteen-year-old Kimberly Mays fits neither description, but her recent court victory could eventually help children who do. Kimberly has been the object of an angry custody baffle between the man who raised her and her biological parents, with whom she has never lived. A Florida judge ruled that the teenager can remain with the only father she's ever known and that her biological parents have "no legal claim" on her.
The ruling, though it may yet be reversed, sets aside the principle that biology is the primary determinant of parentage. That's an important development, one that's long overdue.
Shortly after birth in December 1978, Kimberly Mays and another infant were mistakenly switched and sent home with the wrong parents. Kimberly's biological parents, Ernest and Regina Twigg, received a child who died of a heart disease in 1988. Medical tests showed that the child wasn't the Twiggs' own daughter, but Kimt only was, thus sparking a custody battle with Robert Mays. In 1989, the two families agreed that Mr. Mays would maintain custody with the Twiggs getting visiting fights. Those rights were ended when Mr. Mays decided that Kimberly was being harmed.
The decision to leave Kimberly with Mr. Mays rendered her suit debated. But the judge made clear that Kimberly did have standing to sue ( 起诉) on her own behalf. Thus he made clear that she was more than just property to be handled as adults saw fit.
Certainly, the biological link between parent and child is fundamental. But biological parents aren't always preferable to adoptive ones, and biological parentage does not convey an absolute ownership that cancels all the rights of children.
36. What was the primary consideration in the Florida judge's ruling?
A. The biological link. B. The child's benefits.
C. The traditional practice. D. The parents' feelings.
37. We can learn from the Kimberly case that
A. children are more than just personal possessions of their parents
B. the biological link between parent and child should be emphasized
C. foster homes bring children more pain and suffering than care
D. biological parents shouldn't claim custody rights after their child is adopted
38. The Twiggs claimed custody rights to Kimberly because
A. they found her unhappy in Mr. Mays' custody B. they regarded her as their property
C. they were her biological parents D. they felt guilty about their past mistake
39. Kimberly had been given to Mr. Mays
A. by sheer accident B. at his request C. out of charity D. for better care
40. The author's attitude towards the judge's ruling could be described as
A. doubtful B. cautious C. critical D. supportive

A Lesson in Caring
It was a cold evening. My daughter and I were walking up Broadway. I didn’t notice a guy sitting inside a cardboard box. But Nora . She wasn’t even four, but she ? at my coat and said, “That man’s cold. Daddy, can we take him home?”
??? I don’t remember my . But I do remember a sudden feeling inside me. I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her , whether it was birds flying or children playing. But now she was noticing and beggary.
??? A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who picked up a food package from a nearby school on a Sunday morning and it to an elderly person. I signed us up. Nora was about it. She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how our job was. When Sunday came, she was ready, but I had to myself to leave the house to fetch the food package. On my way to the school, I fought a(n) to turn back. The Sunday paper and coffee were waiting for me at home. Why do this? , we phoned the elderly person we’d been appointed. She us right over.
??? The building was in a bad state. A silver-haired woman in an old dress received us. Nora ran inside. I followed. However, when we talked, I was moved by her struggle against the hard life and realized what our little help meant to her. When the time came to say goodbye, we three hugged. I walked home , touched.
Professionals call such a “a volunteer opportunity”. They are opportunities and I’ve come to see. else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something that’s good for others as well as for yourself? Nora and I regularly serve meals to needy people and clothes for the homeless. Yet, as I’ve her grow over these past four years, I still wonder – which of us has benefited more?
