Think for a moment about the teachers you have had at school or at university. Which one did you like best? And why? Were the teachers you liked best also the ones who were the best teachers, in your opinion? Before you read any further, consider for a moment the qualities that make a teacher outstanding. (杰出的;出类拔萃)

Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have an expert (专家的) knowledge of their subjects, and that they should devote themselves completely to their work. All of these ideas are, of course, true to a certain extent (程度) but they are perhaps a little too simple.

It is impossible for anyone to love everyone they know, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people and in the development of both their brains and their characters. A deep knowledge of the subject is especially important, but equally (同样的) important is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively—a teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to explain ideas in a clear way, how to help students to use the knowledge they are given, how to control a class and so on. Finally, teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy to their work, of course. However, they are also models that their students must follow; so it is important that they should be well-balanced people with interests outside their school work— family, friends, hobbies, and so on. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to become too narrow-minded.

(1)The writer suggests that you think about the teachers who have taught you at school in order that __________.

[ ]

A. you may love them better than before

B. you'll get something you can write about them

C. you might know the qualities that a good teacher should have

D. you might get something for which you will praise them

(2)It is impossible for every teacher ________ according to the article.

[ ]

A. to have a good knowledge of the subject he teaches

B. to have ways to pass the knowledge of his subjects on to his students effectively

C. to be a good example for his students to follow

D. to love all the students he has taught or is teaching

(3)In the sentence "teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them as people…" "they" and "them" refer to ___________.

[ ]

A. teachers and teachers B. students and students

C. teachers and students D. students and teachers

(4)The skills of teaching include __________.

[ ]

A. how to explain ideas in a clear way

B. how to devote a lot more time to their work

C. how to control a class

D. A and C

(5)A teacher who ___________ is likely to be too narrow-minded.

[ ]

A. are well-balanced people with a lot of interests

B. are interested not only in class but also in outside their school work

C. only lives for his work

A picture, a calendar or even a balloon may be the best way for millions of people living in China’s vast country areas to learn about AIDS, one of the biggest threats to public health in the world today.

China has decided to use user-friendly methods including exhibitions, VCDs and TV programmes to spread knowledge of the disease across the nation to try to keep it in check.

Educating people nationwide about AIDS is the top priority(优先权)to prevent the disease from getting out of hand. The farmers will be given knowledge in the easiest way that they can understand.?

A recent survey from the commission(调查团)of more than 7000 people in China showed that nearly 20 percent of them had never heard of AIDS before.Just over 71 percent said they knew AIDS was highly infectious(传染的), but most of them had no clear idea of how the disease could be spread.Just over 62 percent said they knew they could do things in advance to prevent them catching AIDS but they didn’t know what these measures were.

The month-long survey, carried out last December, talked to people in seven countries and cities across China including both developed coastal areas and the less-developed inland areas. The interviewees ranged from 15 to 49 years old, and country residents(居民)were about 63% of the total surveyed.?

Chinese people, especially those in the country, have very little knowledge about what AIDS is all about, not to mention prevention and treatment.By the end of last year, there were 22 517 known HIV/AIDS cases in China. However, more than 6 000 000 people in China have been infected.

Since 1985, China has discovered 880 patients with AIDS-466 of them have died.Sharing needles, prostitution(卖淫)and contaminated blood transfusions(输血传播)are major ways for HIV to spread.A lack of education has been the biggest difficulty against nationwide efforts to prevent AIDS, especially in the countryside.
