A few weeks after my first wife, Georgia, was called to heaven, I was cooking dinner for my son and myself. For a 31 , I had decided on frozen peas. As I was cutting open the bag, it 32 from my hand and crashed to the floor. The peas, like marbles (弹珠), 33 everywhere. I tried to use a broom (扫帚), 34 with each swipe they just rolled across the kitchen.
For the next week, every time I was in the 35 , I found a pea — in a corner, or behind a table leg. They kept 36 . Eight months later I pulled out the refrigerator to clean behind it, and 37 twelve frozen peas hidden underneath (在底下).
At the time I found those few remaining 38 , I was in a new relationship with a wonderful 39 I’d met in a support group. After we married, I was reminded of those peas 40 the refrigerator, and realized that my 41 had been like that bag of frozen peas. It had shattered (破碎). My wife had died; I was in a new city with a busy job, and with a son having trouble 42 his new surroundings and the 43 of his mother. I was a bag of spilled frozen peas; my life had come apart and scattered (散开).
When life gets you 44 , when everything you know comes apart, and when you think you’ll never make it, 45 that it’s just a bag of scattered frozen peas. The peas can be 46 , and life will move on. You’ll find all the peas eventually, including the ones that are hardest to 47 . And when you’ve got them 48 , you’ll start to feel whole again.
The life you know can break apart at any time. But you’ll have to 49 , and how fast you collect your peas depends on you. Will you keep scattering them around with a broom, 50 will you pick them up one by one and put your life back together?

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves --- the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clear will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

62.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely ______.
A. remind ourselves B. praise ourselves
C. make ourselves relaxed D. give ourselves amusement
63.The author would probably hold the view that ______.
A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B. negative words may stimulate us to make more progress

A Tour City ------- Pompeii
Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii (庞贝,意大利那不勒斯附近一座古城) , Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for ------ its stadium (运动场) and theatre, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius (维苏威火山) , a grass-covered volcano (火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted (爆发) for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried (埋藏) under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover (发现) Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20, 000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in even bakery (面包房). In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread ------- a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup (眼部化装品) .
Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
49.Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?
A. To visit the volcano. B. To shop and eat there.
C.To watch sports and plays. D. To see how Pompeiians lived
50. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?
A Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.
B Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.
D Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.
51. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “ exploded” in the third paragraph?
A. 爆炸 B.震动 C.倒塌 D.开裂
52. What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2000 years ago?
A They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
B They liked women wearing all kings of makeup.
C They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.
D They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.

Transportation and communication networks bring people together. Yet sometimes people themselves create barriers(障碍) to transportation and communication. In some countries, laws stop people from moving freely from place to place. Over the centuries, many groups of people have been denied the freedom to travel because of their race, religion, or nationality. In the Middle Ages, for example, Jews were often forbidden to move about freely within certain cities. South Africa's government used to require black Africans to carry passes when they travel within the country. Some governments require all citizens to carry identification papers and to report to government officials whenever they move.
Countries set up customs posts at their borders. Foreign travellers must go through a customs inspection before they are allowed to travel in the country. Usually travellers have to carry special papers such as passports and visas(签证). Some countries even limit the number of visitors to their country each year. Others allow tourists to visit only certain areas of the country, or they may require that travellers be with an official guide at all times during their stay.
Many of those barriers to travel also act as barriers to communication.
When two governments disagree with each other on important matters, they usually do not want their citizens to exchange news or ideas freely. Countries often try to keep military or industrial information secret.
Today, people have the ability to travel, to communicate, and to transport goods more quickly and easily than ever before. Natural barriers that were difficult or dangerous to cross a hundred years ago can now be crossed easily. The barriers that people themselves make are not so easy to overcome. But in spite of all the different kinds of barriers, people continue to enjoy travel and the exchange of goods and ideas.

A. people do not care about the removal of barriers between countries
B. people can not remove the obstacles made by themselves
C. man-made barriers are sometimes harder to overcome than natural ones
