A long time ago, a master went to India. In those times, they didn’t have the communications or many kinds of transportation that we do now. He had never been to India before and when he got there, he saw a lot of fruits. But most of them were expensive because there was little rain. Suddenly he saw a big basket of very red, long fruit.
So he went up and asked, “How much is it?” The shopkeeper said, “Two rupees per kilo.” Two rupees in India is nothing; it’s like dirt. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. But after he ate some of it, he shouted, “Oh, my god!” His eyes watered, his mouth watered and burned, and his face became red. As he coughed and struggled for breath, he jumped up and down, crying, “Ah! Ah! Ah!”
But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people said, “You’re crazy, man. Those are chilies(辣椒)! They’re not fruit!” But the master said, “No, I can’t stop! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat them. It’s my money!”
And you think that master was stupid, right? Similarly, even though we sometimes devote money, time or energy to something, and bitter experiences tell us it won’t work, we still continue just because we’ve put a lot into it, just like the master. So even if you’ve devoted much and lost something, let it go and move on. That’s better than continuing to lose.
