A mother and daughter living in my community are two of the most unfriendly people I have ever come across in my life. They are totally separated, mixing with 1 .As they drive past 2 they keep their eyes looking away and make no sign of acceptance. The only fame they have is making a nuisance of themselves to the local police station by 3 music played too loud, dogs barking more than once a day and any other pretty 4 gripe(把柄).
On moving into this neighborhood, I was 5 of these two but decided I would make up my own mind. This proved quite a 6 to me as more than once either the mother or the daughter would knock on my door and blast(猛烈抨击)me with some 7 or other.
I 8 answered politely and made sure I 9 as they went past my place and also made the effort now and then to make a kind remark about their garden or pets.
Time passed and in October, as part of the kindness rock give(送爱心石活动), Maureen and I 10 to place a kindness rock in their garden.Their 11 remained unchanged, however, and I continued to be as friendly as possible.During the Easter give, we decided once again to 12 these two unhappy ladies to our list and left a packet of cookies on their 13 .Imagine my 14 when two days later they 15 at my gate and jokingly said they are considering hanging their Christmas stockings on their gate, and they 16 me a bunch of flowers!
So, my fellow gifters, do not 17 on your random(随意的)gifts of kindness. You may never know just what this 18 to others, nor how many broken or 19 hearted people you may just change with a simple act of 20 .
German born theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein became a citizen of Switzerland in 1901, the year he began a temporary position 1 a mathematics teacher at the Technical High School in Winterthur. The 2 year he was hired as a technical expert at the patent office in Berne, a position he 3 until 1909.Einstein completed his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1905.
Working in his spare time Einstein 4 three remarkable papers in the year 1905.Each was revolutionary. The first paper on the quantum nature of light(photoelectric effect)led to a Nobel prize sixteen years later. His second paper 5 special relativity made Einstein a household name throughout the world. His third paper provided an explanation for 6 had been known as Brownian motion, the random and hitherto unexplained rapid movements of very small particles suspended in fluids or in air.Einstein’s explanation provided convincing evidence 7 the physical existence of atom-sized molecules.
After 1905 Einstein 8 important contributions to quantum theory and sought to extend the special theory of relativity 9 non-inertial(i.e.accelerating)reference frames. In 1907 Einstein articulated the principle of equivalence. This idea holds that gravitational acceleration is indistinguishable from acceleration 10 by mechanical forces.
In 1909 Einstein became professor of physics at the University of Zurich. He was 11 a full professor 12 the Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague in 1911.About 1912, Einstein began a new period of his gravitational research by 13 his work in terms of the tensor calculus of Tullio Levi-Civita and Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro.Einstein 14 his new work the general theory of relativity.
Einstein received 15 Nobel Prize in 1921 for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect.A visit 16 the United States in 1932 was followed by the 17 of a post at Princeton which he assumed in December 1932.The following month the Nazis 18 into power in Germany and Einstein was never to return there. At Princeton his work attempted to unify the laws of physics. One week before his death Einstein signed his 19 letter, a letter to Bertrand Russell in which he agreed that his name should go on a manifesto urging all nations to 20 nuclear weapons.
I was walking down the road one day when my cell phone rang. 1 voice on the other end spoke to me, “Dad, please come back soon.I miss you so much!” I judged that it was a 2 number.A little while later, the call came once again, so I rudely 3 , “You’ve dialed the wrong number!” and then 4 .
During the following days, I got the same call 5 .But I didn’t care much about it.
Then one day she constantly called me, 6 I didn’t answer. Finally I answered the phone and heard a weak voice, “Dad, please come back.I miss you so much! Dad, I’m 7 so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take 8 of me.But, dad, please 9 me again, OK?” The innocent(天真的,无邪的) 10 was difficult to reject(拒绝).I made a 11 kiss on the phone and heard the weak voice say, “Thank you…Dad, I am so…happy, so…happy…”
Shortly after this, I became 12 about who had been on the other end of my phone. So I called back, and a woman answered, “Sorry, sir.I am really sorry to have 13 you.My daughter has suffered from bone cancer 14 she was born. And her father…died in an 15 a short while ago.I dare not tell her this 16 .Poor baby. When she couldn’t 17 the painful chemotherapy(化疗), she would cry for her dad, who had always 18 her.I really couldn’t bear it, so I gave her a random(随意的)phone number…”
“How is your daughter now?” I couldn’t wait to 19 .
“She has 20 .You must have kissed her on the phone, because she went with a smile, tightly holding the cell phone…”
More and more electronic devices and services in our daily life mean we have too many passwords and numbers to remember.Passwords help us protect our 1 and privacy, however, however, they also bring us a lot of 2 .
Every day I need to remember much 3 information.Every morning I 4 my cell phone-it needs a password.I get to work and I have to have 5 my computer with a password.Like many people in Britain, I have two bank 6 .One needs a five-digit number and a password; 7 needs a six-digit number and a memorable place name.I have an online savings account that needs a different password 8 the password for my bank account.
9 you never use a computer, you can be 10 by the password overload.Look in your wallet.Your probably 11 four or five credit cards. In these days of chip and pin, these are virtually useless if you do not have the magic four-digit numbers. The banks 12 you not to have the same number for all your cards.Give me a break.Am I going to carry five different random(随机的)four-digit numbers in my head? 13 , I'm not Good Will Hunting.
I've tried systems to help me 14 -such as using the names of favorite films or members of my extended family; but none seems to 15 .So what is the solution?
If you are a technical expert, you can download a“password safe”.These are programs that 16 all your passwords so they can be used for accessing sites. The problem is that you can only use this on your home computer, and if that get 17 you are in trouble.
Some of the banks are starting to 18 customers a“dongle(适配器)”, which is a portable password device that plugs into your computer. This is an electronic version of writing the password down on a piece of paper. The 19 is that dongles cost money and if the one your bank gives you doesn't let you store other websites' passwords, you could 20 carrying a dozen dongles in your pocket.
Well, putting all your cash in a box under the bed never seems so attractive.
Once upon a time a peacock(孔雀)and a tortoise(乌龟)became good friends. The peacock lived in a tree on the bank of a river in which the tortoise had his 1 .Every day after the peacock had a drink of water, he 2 dance near the river and 3 his beautiful feathers to his friend.
One 4 day, a hunter caught the peacock and was about to 5 him away to the market. The unhappy bird 6 the hunter to allow him to say goodbye to his friend, the tortoise, 7 it would be the last time he would see him.The hunter 8 and took him to the tortoise.
The tortoise asked the hunter to let the peacock 9 , but the hunter laughed at the request, 10 that was his means of livelihood(生活).Then the tortoise said,“If I give you a beautiful present, will you let my friend go?”
“ 11 ,”answered the hunter,“that is all I want.”
The tortoise 12 into the water and in a few seconds he came up with a beautiful pearl. To the hunter's great astonishment, he handed it to him. This was 13 the hunter's expectation, and he freed the peacock immediately.
A short time later, the bad hunter 14 and told the tortoise that he thought he had not 15 enough for the release of his friend, and 16 that, unless a pearl which is similar to that one was offered to him, he would catch the peacock again. The tortoise, who had already advised his friend to 17 himself in a distant place, was greatly 18 with the greedy man.“Well,”said the tortoise,“if you 19 having another pearl like this one, give it to me and I will find you a(an) 20 match of it.”
The hunter gave the pearl to the tortoise quickly. Then the tortoise replied,“I can't find another one and give you two!”
He disappeared into the river, leaving the hunter sorry for being so greedy.
