Three Umbrellas

Sally was a college student in London. She wanted to buy her mother a nice and useful birthday present, but not too expensive.

One day after a quick and simple lunch, she went shopping. Having looked for half an hour, she came across a shop selling umbrellas at a good price. So she decided to take one.

She thought, “Mom can carry it when she is wearing clothes of any color.” Then she bought a lovely black umbrella and took it to school with her until her class finished.

On her way home in the train that evening she felt hungry, so she went to the buffet car.  She left the black umbrella above her seat. But when she got back, she found it was gone!

Sally burst into tears. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what was wrong. When she explained the black umbrella she had bought for her mother had disappeared, and that she had to get off at the next station, the three other passengers asked her for her mother’s address so that they could send the umbrella to her in case someone returned it after Sally got off the train.

The next week, Sally got a letter from her mother saying “Thank you very much for your lovely presents, but why did you send me three black umbrellas?”

It all started at the beginning of this term. At first, Carmen wasn’t really sure what was happening. In class, she had to squint (眯眼) to see the blackboard clearly. As it got worse, she became more and more worried. It was important for her to see the notes and homework the teacher wrote on the board.

In class, she asked for a desk that was closer to the blackboard. One day, her teacher said, “Carmen, I’ve noticed you squinting a lot. Are you having trouble seeing the board?” Carmen shook her head. “I’m fine, Mrs. Cruz.”

At home, she had to sit closer and closer to the television. Her mother noticed her squinting as she watched her favorite shows.

“Tomorrow I will go to see a doctor,” she said firmly. Three days later, Carmen had new glasses. She was told to wear them all the time. “All of the kids at school will think I am a nerd (书呆子),” she said. “You look just as beautiful with those glasses on as you do without them,” her mother said. But Carmen didn’t believe her.

The next day, Carmen kept the glasses in her pocket as she walked into the schoolyard. Suddenly, she heard her friend Theresa shout. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“My silver ring is gone!” Theresa cried. Carmen could tell that Theresa was very upset. They all looked for the ring in the grassy area of the playground.

Carmen realized that she could search better if she could see better. She took the glasses out of her pocket and put them on. Everything looked so different! So clear! And a glimmer (微光) of silver caught her eye.

“Here it is,” she shouted. “Thanks Carmen,” Theresa said. “I didn’t know you wore glasses. They look great!” “Thanks,” Carmen replied shyly.

As they walked back toward the school building, two more girls praised her glasses. Carmen smiled. “Maybe wearing glasses won’t be so bad after all,” she thought.

I stopped to watch my little girl busy playing in her room. In one hand was a plastic    36 ; in the other a toy broom. I listened as she was speaking to her make-believe(假装) little friend and I’ll never forget the words she said, even though it was imagined.

She said, “Suzie’s in the corner because she’s not been very   37 . She didn’t listen to a   38  I said or do the things she should.” In the   39  I saw her baby doll all dressed in lace and pink. It was   40  she’d been put to sit alone and   41 .

I’m going to fill the house with   55  of a child and her mother, for we are granted only one childhood, and we will never get another.

It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25.

I was nurse on duty that day. I didn’t think there would be any patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five bodies showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.

“Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously.

“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.

But when it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.

Something was wrong, but I didn’t say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She responded, “Take your time; it’s warm here.”

On a hunch (出于直觉), I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address---they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.

I looked out at the family huddled by the Christmas tree. The little one was pointing at the television and exclaiming something to her mother. The oldest one was looking at an ornament on the Christmas tree.

I went back to the nurses’ station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, grumbling about working Christmas, turned to compassion for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into action, much as we do when there’s a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.

We were all offered a free meal in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas Day, so we claimed that meal and prepared a banquet for our Christmas guests. We needed presents. We put together oranges and apples in a basket. We collected from different departments candies, crayons and other things available that could be presents. As seriously as we met the physical needs of the patients that came to us that day, our team worked to meet the needs, and exceed the expectations, of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day.

Later, as the family walked to the door to leave, the four year old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, “Thanks for being our angels today.”
